Alot of Combat Engineers are just Construction Workers with 6 weeks basic training. We are talking about highly training construction engineers will basic weapon skills to survival in a battlefield environmental.

Most of the time, these guys working in the rear of the main force to rebuild bridge and help the rear guard and other support unit get forward.

If they are need in the front line they have full combat troop assigned to help them protected them. The tactical skill they need with be rigging rock falls to trap armoured units or other slowing methods and to me Tactics is not right for this, Surveyor is possibly closer.

At the end of the day Combat Engineers are a high specialised non combat unit, trained to survival the modern battlefield and to work with Full Combat troop support. Medical staff are trained to fight and use weapon, but hardly any will fire them. I think Engineers will be the same, the weapons of choice will be ones that reshape and the lands and make things hard for the enemy.

sorry this post is going to get this topic off course but i have to respound. Combat engineers ARE combat troops in the front line. They have been so for some time and are trained the equal of other front line troops. There advanced training is, at least when i was looking at going into the army many moons ago, 19 week plus the then 8 week basic. There trained in demolitions to blow things up to facilitate an advace or stop one, bulid a bridge under fire, and build obstiles to stop an enemy advance. to name a few. Many nations elite forces start with the engineers.

Now there are construction engineers but they recieve the same level of basic training as other engineers but specialize in road building, building buildings and fixing them, harbors, airfields and etc...

The days of calling the egineers forward are long past becuase they are already there.

Yeah, the name 'combat engineers' tends to imply a forward position.

And in a game with orbital deployment and transporters, everywhere is a forward position.
