PROPER SPELING

I can't help but notice the poor quality of written english on these boards: from grammar to syntax to simple spelling mistakes... It's quite jarring to come across blunders that would make milk squirt out of Dan Quayle's nose in the middle of an otherwise well-argued, well-reasoned post.

I'm perfectly willing to make allowances for international correspondents, whose english is presumably a second language (as it actually is for me, que voulez-vous?), but don't the rest of you people have Spellcheck?

I realize these posts are often written in the heat of the moment, and that even some great authors are notoriously poor spellers, but even re-reading your post just once before you submit it would let some of you spot the most glaring mistakes.

Not to make anyone too self-conscious, mind you, but ST fans are reputed to be amongst the most intelligent, articulate and best educated nerds around. We have a reputation to protect, for ****'s sake!

Ok, I will have to admit to my guilt with this problem. My spelling can be bad, and my grammar even worse. I blame it on my dyslexia. Yeah that's it, dyslexia.

But seriously I do try to keep track of my spelling and correct it when I see it. Grammar is a different story however.

These are quickly written posts. Not letters or business e-mails. Typos and misspellings are just going to happen due to lack of, or scant, proof reading. They're going to happen no matter what. I've mistakenly written "Thier" instead of "Their" and even mistakenly written "Know" instead of "now" . Big deal. With something
more serious or business in nature I'm more careful. Here, while I'd like to type perfectly, I'm just not going to spend the "tyme" always to proof. Doesn't mean I can spell. Since that's my approach, I don't throw stones at other offenders.

As to the afore-mentioned Spellcheck feature - I don't know about hte rest of you, but when I Reply to posts here, my reply is done on a Web page; spell-checking is simply not an option.

So, my brain becomes my spell-checker. (*shudders*) I'm usually fairly good, and sometimes I catch myself out while typing, sometimes I catch myself out when reading over my post after I've posted it...butsometimes, I just couldn't be bothered editing my posts - it's not illegible or incomprehensible (if I feel that it could be, then I edit...), people can still understand my point - I think...

I agree that spelling and grammar errors can interupt the meaning of a particular post, but I also know that the American version of English is one of the harder languages to master. This is not to say that I don't pay attention to the problem, but that I understand that a number of people that have spoken this language all their lives still do not know how to correctly use grammar. This is mostly due to the lack of reading, but thats another story. In my experience, folks from other countries use 'our' language better than 'we' do.
All in all, yes, please do try to proof your posts to avoid the grammatical errors and the spelling difficulties, even if you are using the web to post as I do. On the other side of the fence, I for one will try to understand when these sorts of errors do occur.

BTW, Dandelion: "Put knot yore trussed in spel chequers"... my favorite phrase that passes every spell check I have tried it on...

I'm a horrible speller. Coupled with my total lack of any free time, I'm sure not about to cut-n-paste every post to my own boards into Word to check spelling!

In fact, I'm willing to bet I've got at least two misspellings in this post alone!
