Ah, but they are both french as well as english (British) spellings, cher ami(you clever weasel). British english is closer to french than either American or Canadian english are, for a number of arcane historical reasons...

The only one that bugs me is the "canon" and "cannon" error when citing Trekdom. I'll take a cannon to your canon, say I!

I've lived in the US most of my life, but was born in Scotland & raised by Scottish parents. You wanna see someone get screwed up by that; I still alternate between British and American spelling.

As for my grammar..? I consider these boards the same as IM's...get the message out quick and dirty; I'm not shooting for a prize-winning essay.

I am on the GM Selection Committee at a site that does roleplaying on message boards. One of the criteria I use for voting for a new GM is his ability to use the English language in their proposal. We don't expect the proposals to be 100% perfect. We do allow for typos and brain farts. They happen to everyone.

The reason we have rules for proper English is simple. We have players from all over the United States and the world. If a GM is not able to write in a manner that others can understand him, he will not be able to run a good game, and his game would be a waste of bandwidth and work for the webmaster.

Occasionally, we are accused of being elitists, but the site does maintain a high level of quality. If being an elitist is the price for having a well ran site, you can call me an elitist.

Even as a GM recruiting for a game, grammar and spelling are in important as to whether I would accept a player into my game. I do make exceptions based on age, geography, personal background and education.

You have a very good point. I suspect that some of the problems I'm currently having with our Akira vs D'Deridex simulation are based on one of the members being from Brazil. He does rather well, though...

You have to watch out for other cultural and educational differences. For example: There is confusion about right vs left, degree systems, conversions, and so on. Writing clearly is a definite plus.
