    CODA Starships (Jaynz Versions)

    Constitution Class
Origin: United Federation of Planets / Earth
Class and Type: Constitution class heavy cruiser
Chief of Engineering and Design: Matt Jefferies
    Years in Service: 2245 - 2271

Notes: This is my 'best guess' of what the Constitution class should be like, and varies a little bit from the official versions that CODA provides. This version has her full complement of phasers, with ACB jacketing, as well as enhanced sensors.

They look okay, though you'll want to go back and sell back an Edge on the Connie to up her shield threshold; it's only a 1. You have to spend additional Space to get it up to a 3, and I can't see where you've done that. Trust me when I tell you that a threshold of 1 isn't going to do you much good in a fight. Ditto that for all the designs you've posted to this point; none of them are getting the full benefit from their deflector shields.

I'm not at all sure why you bothered with firing arcs, since the CODA ship combat system doesn't use them. The system's sufficiently abstract that it doesn't matter where they're "pointed". (I'm in the middle of a protracted battle in a PBEM game at the moment, so I'm getting to know the ship combat a little better than I had at first.) I mean, it's great for verisimilitude, but it's hardly necessary for a CODA stat block.

While I know I did it in my original versions of the ships, upon later consideration I found that I couldn't justify making the Saladin and the Hermes into size 5 craft, nor could I justify making the Federation into a size 7 craft. That's certainly a personal interpretation of things, but I think it fits better with both the letter and spirit of the rules. Your mileage may vary.

I completely disagree with the "Flawed Warp Drive" on the odd-nacelled ships, but that's a personal judgment call. Ditto for the ACB Jacketing, since the continuity error regarding firing phasers at warp was to say that they couldn't when it had obviously always been possible. Again, a personal interpretation.

I'll be interested in seeing the stat lines for the systems you've added to the production system. They look like they could be interesting.

If anything we've learned is that shield threshold is a must, you can have unlimited protection, but if they cannot stop a standard hit from causing hull or system damage, you might as well be wearing mail made out of writing paper. Only problem is higher shield thresholds tend to draw a lot of power, or so goes my experience with other ship design systems.

This one doesn't actually care; there's no power allocation in the CODA system.

It's one of the things I liked about CODA. It is also more realistic, and actually mirrors what we see on TV better.

You know, that is one of things I miss on this forum. There has been some great Starship combats done on here. Heck, I remember when they did the Battle at Wolf 259. I thought it was brutal. The Borg was tearing through because they would close to phaser range. Once they finally did, it just rotated to cover that side. Sorry, I got reading PG's comments and was reminded. Back on topic! Sorry!

Was that the one where Steve Long ran the Borg Cube and a bunch of other dudes ran the Starfleet task force?

There are a lot of things I miss on this forum. When Don Mappin started it, it was a really cool site. The folks from LUG would stop by and chat, and we had a LOT of very active members. Flame Wars were few, and it was a nice litle community.

Now, most of the members have gone elsewhere, and the Decipher debacle ened up driving most of the people behind ICON away.

I did see the point about costing up the threshold (and I was attempting to keep somewhat with the official numbers), I hadn't yet read the clarification in Starships, and the rule is complete missing in the PHB. I'll update the ships (again) accordingly tommorow. (For now, simply add two spaces to the Federation, Constitution, and Loknar, and one space to the Hermes and Larson).

I'm not at all sure why you bothered with firing arcs, since the CODA ship combat system doesn't use them. The system's sufficiently abstract that it doesn't matter where they're "pointed".
Just for clarity, and to remind myself that I've included all that I should. An extra torp here or there makes a huge difference...

Well, the Saladin is about 1/2 the size of the Constitution, and the Federation is about twice the twice of the Constitution... so it seemed like the most sensible fit. The 'size system' is fairly abstract anyway.

I'll be interested in seeing the stat lines for the systems you've added to the production system. They look like they could be interesting.
I'll have some more details up tommorow, likely tweaking the ships (again) and finally putting up the rules for Transport Seperation.
