Professional development - how many picks each?

    Hey Patrick,

Was there ever any official correction of character developments that are not balanced with the 20 picks? Or is it supposed to be that in the PG some profession developments provide more than others?

I have a new (Basic) Science Officer in my game and he starts with 23 Professional development picks.

    Thanks for any help.

That doesn't sound right. I'll go look; the only one I know was off was for, I think, a Mystic package. I'll look later and see if I can come up with a pick breakdown for Basic Science Officer.

Okay, Tomcat, let's see what we've got with Basic Science Officer. The whole package should be 25 picks (20 predetermined, 5 choose your own). Here's what I count breaking the predetermined skills down:

    Code:
Computer Use (Retrieve) +2 = 3 picks (2 for skill levels, 1 for specialty)
    Energy Weapons +1 = 1 pick
    Life Science +3 = 3 picks
    Physical Science +3 = 3 picks
    Planetary Science +3 = 3 picks
    Repair +2 = 2 picks
    Space Science +2 = 2 picks
System Operation (Sensors) +2 = 3 picks (2 for skill levels, 1 for specialty)

    TOTAL 20 picks
Throw in the Pick 5 picks, and the character should have a total of 25 picks for Professional Development. Wanna throw the chargen workup up here and let's see if we can figure out what went wrong?

Man... I think I have been looking at two many numbers today. The reason I was out of whack was because the player had included the +5 extra picks. Anyway, here is what he allocated:

    Code:
Computer Use (Retrieve) +2 =3 picks
    Energy Weapons +1 =1 pick
    Investigate +2 =2 picks
Life Science (Biology) +3 =4 picks
Physical Science (Mathematics) +3 =4 picks
Planetary Science (Geology) +3 =4 picks
    Repair +2 =2 picks
Space Science (Astronomy) +3 =4 picks
System Operation (Sensors) +3 =4 picks
    Unarmed Combat +1 =1 pick

    TOTAL 29 picks
    So, he has definitely overallocated.

The specialties on the sciences might not be over-allocation if he took the Journeyman Professional ability, which gives a free specialty when a Science skill is learned. Since choice of professional abilities comes before choosing skills, it would apply at chargen to give him a free specialty in each of the four Science skills the package gives him.

LOL! I guess I need to really re-read through my PG. He does have Journeyman.

My strength lies in the Lord of the Rings more than Trek, so I really appreciate the second set of eyes!
