Fun with promotions

I'm wondering if real militaries ever have fun with promotions like Worf's promotion on Generations and what they did with Tom on Voyager.

I had the entire command crew assembled at Starbase after a particularly harrowing mission for what appeared to be a very serious ass chewing. The admiral launched into them briefly, going down the line, and when he reached the CO (a Commander), I had the player stand up for his chewing out.

Then I RPed the presentation of orders from Starfleet Command and promoted him to Captain. It was amusing because the player had no idea that he was going to be promoted and really thought he was going to get it!
