ICON - Ships of the Star Fleet

From my upcoming LUG TOS guide, "Ships of the Star Fleet". I'm going to try to take a stab at getting an ICON version of much of the TOS ships that are floating around here that anyone's actually ever heard of. This entry is the Cook class, mentioned in the LUG TOS book but not given any information. I don't have direct access to the book, unfortunately, so I forgot the specific ship mentioned - bonus points for who can name it.

    COOK CLASS SCOUT
With the Baton Rogue proving successful for its time, Star Fleet planned to take the components of the ship to create a line of similar, but smaller vessels. A destroyer and scout type was planned making use of the Baton Rogue’s primary hull and VX-20 warp engines. The scout would end up becoming the Cook class vessel.

The Cook would enjoy some moderate success along the frontier, mapping out the ‘empty spaces’ between established Federation outposts and performing much-needed geological surveys on planets which had come under Federation control. Unfortunately rising tensions with the Klingon Empire would keep the Cook’s program limited, as the need for stronger defense far outweighed the need for scientific research at the time.

The Four Year’s War would be the death knell for the Cook class, proving the technology’s relative obsolence in the face of Klingon fire. Three of the seven vessels were lost in rapid succession during the war, with the rest soon pulled out of line duty. With the arrival of the technologically superior Hermes class scout, the Cook class was formally retired from service at the war’s end.

    Ships of the Class
Though 20 ships of the class were originally planned, only seven would be constructed due to the onset of the Four Year’s War. Cook class vessels sadly showed their relative obsolescence in that conflict and no new vessels were ordered.

    CONSTANT WARWICK CLASS FRIGATE
One of the handful of Baton Rogue –based designs, the Constant Warwick quickly became a favorite for those who crewed her. Designed as a light but strong combat vessel, the Constant Warwick would very quickly prove herself in the minor skirmishes which would eventually lead to the Anaxar Rebellion and then the Four Year’s War.
During the Four Year’s War, the Constant Warwick could be found in nearly every engagement and had a stunning track record despite being technologically behind Klingon insurgent forces. Despite extremely high risk and nearly constant engagement, only four of the twenty vessels of the class would be lost in the conflict, and each is said to have died ‘proudly’, taking their enemies with them. A position aboard a Constant Warwick was a sign of respect and honor.
When the Constant Warwick class was announced to be obsolete, it was not without controversy or political incident. A handful of the class’s captains attempted to refuse orders to transfer to the newer ships coming on line, and demanded instead that the remaining Constant Warwicks be uprated with new technology. Unfortunately the older frames proved unsuitable for an affordable upgrade and the plans to retire the class were reluctantly pursued. The class was officially retired in 2256, replaced by the Conventry and Surya classes.

    Ships of the Class
The Constant Warwick was appropriated with a complement of 20 vessels, all of which were completed and served within the Four Year’s War. Even though they were becoming technologically obsolete by the 2250s, debate ranged constantly to bring more ships of the class into the fleet, though this did not pan out for the ships’ supporters.

    Description And Notes
The Federation class represents the most powerful military starship of the age. With an enlarged primary hull, generous power systems, and a large array of weaponry, the class exists primarily as a potent deterrent to Klingon and Romulan aggression. In addition to greater weaponry, the class also sports command and control capabilities, making them ideal task-force leaders if hostiles were to begin once again.

The ship class, however, is highly controversial one, as several Federation members (notably the Vulcans) consider it too militant and single-purposed for their tastes for the unified Star Fleet. Its high cost in both construction and in maintenance also gives the Council Appropriations committee great pause in authorizing more ships of the class to be built.

    Ships of the Class
With the controversy surrounding the creation of the Federation class, it’s no surprise that only a handful of the vessels would actually see construction and that appropriations would be piecemeal through the 2260s. Eventually, however, the full allotment of twenty Federation class vessels would be fielded to along the Neutral Zone, helping to ensure the peace through the remainder of the 2260s.

    Description and Notes
Though technically a Terran design, the Loknar represented the first Federation fleet design primarily intended for use by the Andorians. The Andor defense fleet (wrapped into Star Fleet completely in 2265) was rapidly falling behind technologically. With even their newest vessels falling behind the Baton Rouge in capability, Andor was becoming increasingly desperate to have a modern vessel for their defense.

Their argument won out, and with their input in both design and purpose, Star Fleet created one of the most widely accepted designs in the fleet. The Loknar proved herself quickly in border defense roles as well as serving in direct action during the Axanar Rebellion. After that war, the Loknar quickly became the combat frigate of choice for Star Fleet.

Though a handful of Loknar class vessels still remain under Andor’s direct command, the majority of builds were later appropriated as part of Star Fleet’s general command, enabling their use for hot-spots across the Federation frontier.

    Ships of the Class
The Loknar would become one of the more popular starship classes of its range, particularly among Andorian crews. As older ships were retired from the Andorian planetary fleet, invariably they would request the replacement be a Loknar class frigate. Fifty of these vessels would be allocated by the end of the 2260s, making it the single most proflic starship class created since the Daedalus over 100 years before.

The Baton Rogue class was launched in 2221 as the ultimate “hard fusion” warp-capable starship. In her day, she was the most potent and advanced vessel that the Earth fleet could field. Many elements of her design and components would make their way into new ships through the next few generations of Starship design.

The ships of the class performed nobly in protecting the Federation frontier and proved a daunting challenge for Klingons up through the Four Year’s War. Unfortunately that war would also show the design’s limitations. Despite the vessel’s versatility and performance, it was clear that her day had finally come and the new Constitution class had easily outclassed her in performance.

Though rendered obsolete during the Four Year’s War, a handful of the Baton Rogue class vessels remained in service through the 2270s as crew trainers and defense ships (with their old “Tesla” class cannons replaced with Type VII phasers.

    Ships of the Class
The original order for the Baton Rogue class was a mere 10 ships, designed to be the ‘backbone’ of Earth’s fleet. Rather than act independently, the new ships would work in concert with older ships and new light ships to form defensive task forces.
USS Baton Rouge (NCC 1300), retired to Memory Alpha
    USS Moscow (NCC 1301)
    USS Peking (NCC 1302)
USS Britannia (NCC 1303), lost in Four Year’s War
    USS Los Angeles (NCC 1304)
USS Yamato (NCC 1305), lost in Four Year’s War
    USS Hokkaido (NCC 1306)
USS Savannah (NCC 1307), missing, presumed destroyed
    USS Tehran (NCC 1308)
    USS Petersburg (NCC 1309)
Even before the beginning of the Four Year’s War, it was clear that Earth’s initial plans for the Baton Rogue was not sufficient. In the years leading to the far, a second batch of Baton Rogue vessels was ordered to supplement the fleet, along with a new single-ship capability directive.
    USS Marseilles (NCC 1360)
    USS Devonshire (NCC 1361)
USS Sydney (NCC 1362), lost in Four Year’s War
    USS Vladivostok (NCC 1363)

Most of these stats seem decent, although I think giving the Federation Class almost as much power as a Galaxy Class is too much.

I'm going to take the Cook Class and do up some FASA STCS stats for it.

It's based on what the PB-31 nacelles generate, and there's three of them. I think you're seeing a side-effect of the TOS and TNG games not quite syncing up well with the numbers, though you could argue that the TNG ships are uber-efficient and don't 'bleed' a lot of usable power?

    Yeah... tough call there...

Anyway, no usable article for today. Most of what I was doing was writing up starship components more formally for the RPG and then going over the included starship roster yet again to check that all the equipment listed has the right numbers.

I'll try to post something interesting tomorrow.

I get around that by handling the Power stat in a more abstract way, by giving it a power stat in between the Constitution (135) and the Excelsior (160), which is a tad more difficult, more intricate, but it does leave the ship without too much power.

I also don't give the Federation aft Torp Launchers, unlike you and a lot of other people, and simply give it the two forward ones like in the SFTM and SFB Middle Years.
