    I have a hard time seeing that coming up in a meeting. "R&D says ICON is too good. We must kill it for d20 to thrive!" Why didn't they scoop up everyone else with a half-decent house system, then? I don't recall anything about them trying to buy SJG or the like at the time...

    I'd accept that they would rather try and acquire LUG's ability to produce full-colour quality hardcovers on a relatively meager budget.

    It's always been inferred that WOTC bought out the LUG primarily with an eye at getting the Star Trek franchise. What they didn't bet on was that Paramount/CBS would reclaim the rights and offer them to Decipher. The PG rights have reverted back to Paramount again so it will be interesting to see what happens next. As for the OP's posting material I believe that as long as the material isn't being released for profit then there should be no problem.

    Sadly it's simpler than that. WotC indeed wanted the licenses that LUG had managed, but Lucas refused to allow a Trek game to be made by the same company, and the Tolkien estate flat out refused to be part of the D&D verse... so, that was that.

    That said, this thread was posted only BECAUSE the information is out of print and has zero chance of being re-released in the future.
