Here's one I like, from the film 1984 (I don't recall if it is in the book as well):

"There will be spontaneous demonstrations by party workers voicing their gratitudes and joys."

    Gawd, I love that!

Given the *ahem--excuse me while I pass gas* Summit of the Americas happening in Quebec in the not-to-distant future, I thought that quote was kinda appropriate.

    For me it will always be the last words of Groucho Marx. From his deathbed in the hospital he said;

"Either these curtains go or I do."

    And then he was gone.

I've always wondered what happened to the curtains.

One of the most reliable quotes is this one:

Life wasn't meant to be easy. (Malcolm Fraser, former Australian Prime Minister, don't remember when.)

One of the more recent oft-ridiculed comments is this one:

By 1990, no Australian child will be living in poverty. (Bob Hawke, former Australian Prime minister, in a 1987 election speech. We're still waiting for this election promise to be fulfilled, two Prime Ministers later.)

    Then there's this little gem:

Roses are Red, / Violets are Blue, / And my underwear is off-white. (Spike Milligan.)

    ------------------
A couple of comments to throw in times of stress to that person who's really annoying you...

"Oohhh. Did I just step on your itty-bitty ego?"
"How many times do I have to flush before you go away?"

"The R.101 is as safe as a house, except for the millionth chance..."
Air Minister Thomson, refering to the airship that would kill him and all but 3 others aboard.

Just goes to show...don't laugh in the face of improbability.

    Cool

    I just found this one...

"Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies."
    - Voltaire (1694-1778)

Querlin: Weeeell, stands to reason, we all know that millionth chances crop up 9 times out of 10. (Careful, it has to be exactly one millionth chance)

    While I'm at it:

Kids! Bringing about Armageddon can be dangerous. Do not attempt it in your home.
-- (Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Good Omens)

"Now we've got a truth to die for!" "No. Men should die for lies. But the truth is too precious to die for."
    -- (Terry Pratchett, Small Gods)

"[...] a number of offences of murder by means of a blunt instrument, to whit, a dragon, and many further offences of generalized abetting [...]"
    -- (Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!)

Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.
-- (Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms)

Sorry ... couldn't chose. Just feel happy I didn't copy the whole books .

Can you tell that I like Terry Pratchett's writings?

Here's a quote I always thought would be good on a dedication plaque:

[The Hero] must be a complete man and a common man and an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor -- by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in this world and a good enough man for any world ...
    -Raymond Chandler

Comaboy: Chandler is very quotable. I like:

"She gave me a smile I could feel in my hip pocket."

    and

"It was a blonde. A blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window."

    Both from Farewell My Lovely.

Hey Cmdr Powers, I flew a Red Flag mission. If you ever get a chance, try riding a C-130 at low level (like 50-100 feet) through rugged mountains while F-15s try to shoot you down. E-ticket rides ain't got nothin' on that.
