Based on the Aerie class spaceframe, the Berlin class security cutter is a small patrol vessel designed to patrol the interior of the federation. The lack of a torpedo launcher was not seen as a deficit due to the primary encounters being with pirates and other small vessels, but a probe launcher was installed to allow the launching of surveillance probes. The Type V phaser was picked as a suitable offensive armament to allow the vessel to defend itself. The ship operates with a crew of 12 and has room to carry an extra 5 security officers for boarding actions or specialists if needed. A later upgrade included a small holodeck for training exercises and to relieve boredom on routine patrols.
