Star Trek III: The Search for Spock – the Earth’s orbital spacedock facility
One of the defining moments for Star Trek III was the Enterprise’s last return home and seeing the future of Starfleet’s next evolution in starships the Excelsior. The huge space dock was one of the largest Starfleet facilities seen to date dwarfing the Trouble with Tribbles K7 space station. With an internal docking area large enough to hold several of the largest starships at the same time with room to maneuver.
While watching the film and they had began to steal the Enterprise I was wondering if they were going to shoot their way out of the spacedock. A few years later Dave and I had thought about using that scenario in an adventure and set it up but the players had beamed a team into the operations center and opened the doors and they beamed out as the ship sailed from the station. The ship jumped to warp as the station had opened fire and local security vessels responded to the theft.
I have also made upgrades of this very station into the Next Generation Version and the larger version where the ships occasionally stop for a change of crew, the pickup of cargo and that can be one of our kick off points or finish points of the adventure. Over at Owen E. Oulton web site where he has pages for Starbase 21 and 23 I was knocked for a loop as I had not thought about secondary facilities in the same area around the spacedock when it was in orbit of a planet. I have been recently working on a few stations that would be near the only Starbase that we uses regularly in our adventures where we would find such stations where our characters could find something to do. I was thinking of adding in the old Starbase that we used in the 23rd century adventures with some modifications making it more 24th century aligned. It was a Watchtower class like from the Vanguard novels I generated shortly after it appeared. I was also thinking a small yard of several orbital dry-docks and construction office and maybe one or two Regula type science laboratory space station. We have used the Regula type station all the way back to early FASA days. I made much of the systems equal to that of the Constitution class as it is the most advanced until the Excelsior appeared on the scene. This station is current too just prior to the launch of the Excelsior class starships, were they would upgrade systems with better systems.
I will post the 24th century version of this very station in the coming weeks and I will also post the larger station that I intend for a deep space version of the post nowhere near a planet. This station is easily upgradable for anyone’s use. I would liked to see that the station had better shields but to remain in the parameters of spacedock I could only do so much.

This is the Federation’s largest and most versatile spacedock-starbase that is an operational facility located whether it is in orbit of a planet or just in space. Although this station is the largest facility that starfleet has there are other facilities that are dwarfed by the stations such as the Death Stars. This station is a completely upgradable station weapons, shields can be upgraded shields and capacity of shuttles. I left over 5230 SU’s for future upgrades and expansions of the stations systems and sub systems. With continual upgrades this station can be used in any time period of the Next Generation Era. I suggest the uprating of shields every other year by 50 protection and weapons every three to five. The addition of enlarged hanger bays to house additional shuttlecraft would come in handy for a growing active station on the boarder frontiers of the Federation. This station is capable of handling any attack of a single starship and a small armada of attacking vessels
I generated this station by using a coda version of create space station and such facilities I integrated the additions of additional sickbays, sensors, and communications systems. The defensive measures applied to this station are capable of taking on a small to medium sized armada for a short period of time. At any given time there are a few federation starships stopping by for service, shore leave or general maintenance to assist in the defense alongside the three standard Miranda class starships that are permanently assigned to the station near the Romulan, Klingon boarder areas in conjunction with the boundary of the Federation. There are several Oberth-class science ships that are based out of the spacedock facility making in depth science surveys of the surrounding sectors.

Notes: Typically the station business is routine operations and activities most of the time, nevertheless during the times of hostilities the station is the local command center in the sector for all the starfleet activities in the local sectors. Much of the starbase duties are that of a commercial freight and travels between the local colonies as well as a stopover for the wandering traveler and the occasional diplomatic confrance with local goverments. There are civilian and starfleet starships coming and going at all hours of the day and the night. All approaching starships must make contact with the station to request entry into the stations zone of protection and most have scheduled their arrival days, if not weeks in advance with the command staff or starfleet.
There are several colony and inhabited planets in the local sector that are space going species. Although they are not associated with the Federation they are treated as protectorates and the Federation sends aid when they are in need. The closest edge of the Romulan boarder is just over thirty light-years away and the klingon boarder is thirty five light-years away. Starfleet located the station along the local trade routes the stations sees dozens of alien trading vessels passing through the sector. The Ferengi have opened a trade shops in the merchant levels of the station and are learning that the Federation laws are not to be messed with.
The station is commanded by a Flag officer (Rear Admiral (lower)) but the Executive officer runs most all of the day to day operations of the station leaving the Admiral free to deal with the diplomacy of the position.
The Class Delta tractor beams guide the ships into dock and into docking position and then Class Beta tractor beams take over and hold the ships in position and a telescoping docking passage is extended out to join the ships docking ports. The weight is shared between the four tractor beams holding the station in position. The 32 docking slips are capable of holding the ships endlessly.
When not in orbit of a planet the station does not need emergency transporters. A station located in an area where the station could be in danger of attack the station would have better armaments and heavier shielding.
Personal notes: The stations offensive capability is capable of taking out several Galaxy-class starships in a single salvo of photon torpedoes while both the station and the Galaxy-class running with full shields. Shields are capable of holding off an armada of ships until the arrival of other ships to assist in the stations defense. Personally with the offensive capacity the station needs not assistant of any ships.
I see the operational missions of the station is a combination of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 for the coming missions. This large station is even bigger than Babylon 5 but houses less personnel than that of the Babylon station. I can handle traffic far heavier than the Babylon as well as the cargo.
