Post Poll: Favorite & Worst Board Game?

Recently we have seen polls on favorite ROPG, least favorite RPG, and even the favorite least popular RPG. But, what about your favorite and worst board games you have played? As for the definition of board game, I would include games such as Connect Four and Battleship because they do use a playing "board" of sorts. I'll start us off.

I have two favorite board games. One is Dungeon by TSR. I still have a second printing in great condition and even have the miniatures for it too. The game is basically a D&D dungeon crawl. The goal is to accumulate a certain amount of gold depending on what character class you play (dwarves and elves were considered classes...don't ask). It's a quick game, easy to learn, and very competitive with a bunch of players. Especially since you could try to steal from other people. :-)

My second favorite is Dragonquest by CGW. If you can actually find this game, buy it! The game was very challenging and NEVER the same game twice. The board was a bunch (forgot the number) empty squares with four corners. A player would start at one of the corners. The object was to get into the dragon's chamber to get treasure and out of the castle in 24 turns. Now, here is where it gets interesting. You moved one square per turn and had to randomly draw a tile to see what kind of room you walked into. It was feasible to get dead ends so you could never even get close to the dragon's lair. Also, each character was very unique and some of the monsters you could encounter in the game were very nasty. I truly love this game.

As for the worst board game, it has to be Pictionary. I had some BAD moments with that game and if you play with people who are very competitive it can get real ugly fast. I actually watched one of my friends nearly throttle her teammate because that person couldn't figure out she was drawing Europe.

    So, let's hear about yours!

I think I'd have to go with Supremacy as my fave, though the old MB Shogun comes close.

Worst...Kingmaker. 'cause my wife kicks my ass BAD whenever we play.

Best: Talisman. I have the Games Workshop version, with all the minis and the add on packs. It rules if you have a few hours to play.

Worst: Encore. It's a game like pictionary, except you have to sing. Nobody in their right mind wants to hear me sing.

    Best 3
    1) Ultimatum
When you see that your enemy has built a nuclear arsonnel big enough to crush you and your able to talk him out of a first strike long enough to launch your own.... Excellent.

    2) Shogun
    Just as good on computer.

    3) Kingmaker
    With a few mods.

    Worst games
Anything that has everything including the kitchen sink type rules. SPI Air War for example.

    Best?

Trivial Pusuit Star Wars edition - I win everytime which is nice...
Talisman, first edition with all the add ons...
    Advanced Heroquest.
    Risk. Rocks

    And oddly;
Aliens by West End Games, the RPG sucked big goats, but the boardgame was fun...

    Worst?
Not really applicable, I like everything, however a friend of mine was laid up with a particularly bad broken leg for 3 months last year so we got back into board games. One of which was an old early 80's edition of Trivial Pursuit where we found that many questions were either out of date due to the changing political climate, or just plain incorrect in several cases...

And the was much amusement. But only until we found out that you cannot buy updated questions anymore...

If you can get a group of seven people together to play, and an entire day to do so, Civilization is excellent! Wish I could still find that one...

    My personal favourite: Formule De.

I also like 'History of the World' - an excellent, well balanced game in which nobody can get knocked out.

And 'Missisipi Queen' (I think that's the title) - racing paddle steamers!

Also entertaining: the Buffy Board Game (the US version not the crappy UK one).

    Dislikes:

'Road to the White House' - played too many times and I always do badly. I guess I wasn't cut out for politics.

Hey! I love the TNG VCR Game! :-) "Experience...bij!" Or bah..or whatever the heck it was. The reason I love this game so much is we all talk back at Robert Riley's character when he comes on screen. A total MST3K of the game. One time, at college, we got access to an AV room with surround sound and projected it on a movie size screen. THAT rocked. Especially that you constantly heard the hum of the Enterprise D's engine. True surround sound.

Assuming you classify wargames as board games:

    Panzer Leader
    Panzer Blitz
    Sands of War GDW
    Hetzer SPI's Sniper series
    IDF

I have never really run into a board game that I can class as the worst.

Strangely, our local WotC store has the Advanced Civilization box (about five copies) but not the basic Civilization game (which is required to play Civ)

    Go fig.

    Thumbs up

Cool. I'll keep an eye out for ya' Gamethyme! The pub I usually play at is Route 66. I know, I know ... why a pub in Toronto has that name is beyond me, too.

I bought the civ boardgame, but everyone I asked to play it was scared off by the length of the game, and I lost some of the pieces. Maybe I'll try the game Diplomacy. Anyone tried that Avalon Hill Star Wars game, or that sci fi one where each species can bend or break one rule? Anyone think A&E Europe will be ported to the PC?
