This topic is about a thousand times more devastating than opening Pandora's Box.
Let me summarize this for you, praetor. There is no Starfleet Marines. If there is any, it has gone the way of the dodo bird and UESPA back in TOS. The Star Trek franchise and Paramount have avoided this subject as much as they avoid using human religions on the show.
If anything, it is the Starfleet Security Branch that handles any primary marine-like combat duties.
Though there have been many arguments and it is usually neverending, they're based on fan's conjecture or interpretation seen or mentioned (without specifically mention "marine") on the shows.
If you still wish to continue on this project, I can provide you a link below. Again, this is based on one fan's interpretation of including non-canon Starfleet Marines into a LUGTrek game. In fact, I find it so useful I included it into my LUGTrek game.
I have stayed out of this one for a LOOOOOONG time, but I have to add a weird sidebar.
I was going through my Trek stuff and came across my Star Trek V movie magazine from Starlog press, and lo and behold, in an OFFICIAL Paramount approved magazine is conceptual artwork labeled "Starfleet Marine" that was produced by Paramount at the time, like 1989. Sure they backed off, and yes they do not want to use the idea, but it was there! So technically though not mentioned, the troops with Kirk were marines, at least in one draft of the script.
Now, as for the look it was VERY different from what was onscreen. It wasn't power armor with a Phaser cannon type stuff that Ross wanted to avoid from marine proponents in LUG days, but it was more like the body suits from Aliens or Starship Troopers the Movie, with an early draft of the compression rifle. Not too overpowering, but better still than the body armor worn by security in the movie era.
I have no opinion on wether to inclde them or not beyond saying, Gene declared Major West apocryphal, I didn't. -_^ but who's counting??
Play what you like, an RPG is your world, you are gawd!
If you are happy with living non-canon (or semi-canon, or something), We could have a discussion. Perhaps we should move to email to reduce the risk of restarting what is by now an OLD and tired war.
