    Defiant-refit (2385) Indomitable-class

The Defiant Defense Project began in 2366 as a counter to the Borg threat. Although it's stated goal was to create a new Heavy Escort, privately StarFleet officials acknowledged that the vessel was in fact, intended to be the first Warship ever designed by the Federation. The Defiant program was shelved for several years as the Borg threat diminished, but then because of the rise of threat of Dominion aggression the project was again reinstated and a prototype built and launched in 2371. During the Dominion war the Defiant proved brutally effective though had several design issues and so with the advance's in technology and a desire to rectify the design issues by 2385 a "Defiant refit" had been developed. (Defiant class refits were renamed Indomitable-class), all the original flaws were addressed and rectified, making Indomitable-class Heavy Escorts a potent and versatile offensive platform. These vessels are designed for deep space tactical operations and perimeter defense, and are dedicated warships. Because of this they are spartan vessels, with little consideration given to crew comfort.

Employs a remarkable first generation two-layer system to avoid detection. First, it uses several special low-power chronoton field emitters, essentially "poor man's cloaking devices", to mask the ship from sensors. At a passing glance, a sensor scan would go right over it. In the event that they manage to arouse some attention, the second system is brought online: a silicon-based biological compound on the hull that mimics the surrounding colors and lights with remarkable accuracy.
*Rather then fitting a traditional cloaking device all Indomitable-class vessels use the newly developed LOS (Low Observation Suite), these early prototype systems provide approximately 75% of the effectiveness of the Romulan type 8 cloaking device while being able to be operate with significantly less power.

Wave Man, the term "wave man" is the English translation of 'Ronin' (Japanese word) and literately translates to "wandering person" and in a modern context a WaveMan is one who is socially adrift or a SalaryMan who is between employers.

These ships are designed for close-quarters combat and interception, and to rectify the inherit design flaws in the original Defiant platform. They are small, nimble, and very well armed. Their primary armament is two Type XIIp pulse phaser cannons (uprating the Type X pulse cannon that were originally installed), and a complement of five Type X phaser arrays. The Type X arrays grant the Indomitable greater offensive firepower and the ability to change firing vectors rapidly when the vessel is engaging multiple targets (a common occurrence during the Dominion war). For extra punch and for defense at longer ranges, four turreted torpedo launcher's, two forward and two aft are also included. Lastly the vessel retains the 'detachable warhead' of the original Defiant, which houses 6 MKIII Quantum torpedoes [1200 isotonne yield when detonated].

Current Perimeter Defense plans include the deployment of two or three Heavy Escorts with no other starship support, making a sort of "wolf pack", while full-fledged task forces will likely include eight or more of these vessels. They were also designed to compliment and support the Falcon Class Strike Cruiser, and such deployments would usually consist of one Falcon-class, two Indomitable-class and one Orion-class vessels. These vessels are also the companion vessels to the Atrox-class carrier, the Atrox is never deployed without at least one Indomitable-class vessel as escort.
