Wells-class Timeship (2886) (also known as a Polarity class)

I have long wanted to do this write up, the Wells Class, a 29th century Federation Timeship. I tried to stay true to the write up in All Our Yesterdays page 99 but had to make some adjustments to transfer over to Space Dock. I will make notes as I go to explain my thinking. I relied on Omega's 25th century star ship advancement notes as well.
The Wells-class (also known as the Polarity-class in All Our Yesterdays) vessel is a general purpose time ship used to study, prevent, and/or correct temporal anomalies, alteration to the timeline/history, and so forth. While they cannot travel trough time itself, they come equipped with a temporal transporter, chronal communications system, and chronal sensors which allow them to scan the timeline and transport people to and from various points in time.

One of the most famous vessels of the class was the USS-Relativity. The USS Relativity (NCV-474439-G) was a 29th century Federation Wells-class starship operated by Starfleet. This timeship was commissioned at the University of Copernicus, and was under the command of Captain Braxton. It had dealings with USS Voyager

*shields allow this vessel to enter the corona of most stars

It may seem unusual for such a vessel to be equipped with a cloaking device, but as a dedicated temporal/science vessel it was determined that many situations would require the vessels to have such a device. So they can accomplish their primary mission the Wells-class are equipped with the most advanced science systems available as of the 29th century.
While these vessels aren't designed for combat, they are well equipped to handle most tactical situations. Vessels from early periods would find themselves completely outmatched by a Wells-class.

All primary holo-programs (LMH, LEH Avatar) have a mobile emitter available to them, allowing off-vessel travel.

Wave Man, the term "wave man" is the English translation of 'Ronin' (Japanese word) and literately translates to "wandering person" and in a modern context a WaveMan is one who is socially adrift or a SalaryMan who is between employers.

Although All Our Yesterdays claims that the Relativity is a Polarity class Timeship, the image they show is definitely NOT the same class as the Relatvity. Based on the appearance (windows, et cetera) the Wells class is a much larger sip than the miniscule Polarity class. I personally would go with the size speculated in DITL's site: http://www.ditl.org/ship-page.php?Cl...istOption=temp - otherwise, good stuff!

yeah they seemed to bugger that image up in All Our Yesterdays page 101, I pulled the ones off the web, which correlate to what we saw onscreen.

as far as size I took it directly off All Our Yesterdays. I did see that DITL write up as well (though found it very wanting as it didn't offer much in the way of firm data) I also used these links for inspiration

The standard 29th century Quantum Slipstream capable auxiliary craft assigned to all capitol ships and star bases. Because of there size and capability they are considered starships in their own right, carrying their own NCC registration numbers. Their QSS drives allow them to travel vast interstellar distances quickly.

as far as size I took it directly off All Our Yesterdays. I did see that DITL write up as well (though found it very wanting as it didn't offer much in the way of firm data)
The thing is that the size from the AOY supplement make the Relativity about the same size as the Defiant (which is somewhere between 130 and 170 metres). Though the DITL page may be lacking in detail, they aren't producing gaming stats and always attribute their information, speculation or otherwise. DITL's size puts it a bit larger than the Constitution refit. Even that may be to small. The first Memory Beta link you provided gives a length of 195 metres - better but still too small. The second Memory Beta link provides this comparison image with an Ambassador cless:
This one shows it to be about 450-500 metres. Much better. There's no way in the universe that a 150+ metre long ship carries a runabout-sized vessel as a small craft.

that's the problem with the size scaling, Runnabouts are size class 2, just like the Attack Fighter (30.2m), Talon-class scout (24.36m), and all shuttles (not shuttle pods, which are size class 1) It would be with in the rules of space dock to put multiple size class 2 vessels ( Size 2 max length 50m as in runabouts) into a size class 4 shuttle bay (Size 4 max length 149m). Just a quirk of the system. BTW the Defiant (size class 5 170.68m has a size class 2 shuttle 9.64 m and several shuttle pods in their shuttle bays, as per Space Dock as per the rule you could replace the shuttle with a runabout and it would still fit in the shuttle bay) As far as the rules go there is no difference in size between a shuttle and a runabout, for me they should have made runabouts size class 3 and ruled them only be able to fit in say size class 6 and above vessels.

I have thought about this and I decided to put the vessel to the maximum of the limits of a size class 5 vessel, should alleviate some of the scaling issues.

I'm not talking about what the rules allow, I'm talking about real-world size relationships. Rules must be interpreted with some sort of realism considered. This hearks back to the bad old days of doing Champions characters which made no sense at all, but were "legal" builds. Personally, I think that the Spacedock! and all other systems which use abstract sizes and SCUs fall apart. They must be run through a "reality check" filter.

to do that, as in a reality check, would require you to rewrite most of the iconic cannon based space dock write ups (as the Defiant example I highlighted in the previous post). It's just a quirk of the system and one of those things to come to light if you scrutinize the write up's too carefully. I would also note that there are many size class 5 vessels in Space Dock that have large shuttle compliments, if you have issue with one you have to have issue with all. I do concede (and alluded to this fact) that the size scaling for runabouts and other large type auxiliary craft (Talon and Attack Fighter particularly) is somewhat wrong and unrealistic.

But that being said I was trying to work with in the bounds of Space Dock and that should be taken into consideration, it is easy to pick these things apart and basically erode the verisimilitude of the system with a pedantic and critical analysis of a particular build. I would also suggest if someone doesn't like any particular build (or aspect of a build) change it to suit their own tastes or particular sense of realism.

One last point to consider is some of these vessels are bigger on the inside then they are on the outside (extra-dimensional storage) and so it is not unreasonable that some shuttle bays could conceivable fit large auxiliary craft in a smallish host vessel.

I have tweaked the length of both the Wells-class and the Shuttle to alleviate concerns with scaling, though did not go so far as to raise the Wells size category, as that changes the entire build and I would have to redo the entire thing. (as most calculations for SU's are based on Size). I personally feel the Wells should be a Size class 5 vessel, from what I saw on the episodes featuring this vessel I got the impression it was a medium sized (actually on the smaller side of Medium) vessel. I suppose there could be an augment for Size class 6 (length range of 300-399m) but IMHO a length of 450m (making it Size class 7) does not reflect the Wells accurately.

I have been thinking of doing a build of the Enterprise of this era (2880's), though the only info I can find is on the Enterprise-R (2752) which is 100 odd years earlier. I may just go with the next in line progression (Enterprise-S) though I really like the idea of calling this next class (as the progression seems to end at R) the Infinity-class and I would put her name as USS-Enterprise NCC-1701∞

That Enterprise-R is the ugliest piece of fan-wank I've ever seen, making the JJ-Prise a paragon of design virtue in comparison.

agreed, is a pathetic example and a waste of time IMHO.

Why not something stranger and more, you know, future-y, too? "This is the Dimension Nexus Enterprise," or "This is the Planetcraft Enterprise," or just go with Starfleet not needing ships any more, since long-range transporters plus time travel equals instantaneous galaxy-wide movement.

I liked the idea of a Universe-class(Enterprise-J http://en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wik...e_(NCC-1701-J) but that has already done (name along the same line as the Galaxy-class). I still like the Infinity-class idea and really like the "USS-Enterprise NCC-1701∞" name.
