Klingon D’tai Class Battleship from STTNG episode "The Defector"

The specs are over at DITL http://www.ditl.org/ship-page.php?Cl...i&ListID=Ships

I thought that this vessel was ripe for a design and had an hour of free time between lawyers. So I sat and made the ship. Here is the D’tai Battleship designed with the ratings from DITL in mind. It is still a pretty large and powerful warship even though it had some weaknesses here and there.

another enjoyable read mate. I try to avoid writing up Klingon ships, they are (as per Klingon Space Dock rules) usually inferior to Federation ships in several area's. I have to ask, why didn't you use the Gel'joQ-class battleship (commissioning date 2357, page 34 Klingon Space Dock/recognition manual)?

Well I was killing time and created a ship that was with in the Star Trek cannon and would be useable. I agree that Klingon ships are lacking in many areas but they tend to have an edge in many combat scenarios. Especially when they have heavy weapons like this one a few shots and the shields are shredded. With some interesting power management each of heavy Mark 16 Pulse Disruptors can fire all five times and would be able to take down a Galaxy class shields in a few rounds. As I see it, it is truly a battleship or more like a dreadnought in design. When the chance comes I hope it lives up to the ideals of design as I only lightly ran it through my own tests out of game play to see if all was right with it. For the Gel'joQ-class battleship I didn’t really look for it or anything. I tripped across this at DITL and thought that I would be a good addition to the Klingon fleet. If you note many of my ships of late are mostly outside of the Cannon parameters by light-years. I need to stay closer to home for a while. Unless something truly interesting pops up.

fair enough mate. I totally agree with your assessment of Klingon vessels, with them designed almost purely to excel in combat and not being well suited for anything else.

This here is how I envisioned the fight would have gone if the Romulans had opened fire. The Enterprise would have sustained three direct hits from the Romulan Warbirds dropping the shields to 63.3% in the initial firing. The Romulan Warbirds would then have started directing their fire at the Klingon ships each ship taking at least one hit to their shields with little effect while any other shots would have either missed or just been a little effect before the Klingon returned fire. Then the Klingon ships would have opened up one Battleship targeting a Warbird each. They would be targeting specific elements of the Warbirds such as weapons and engines. Each Warbird would have taken at least two volleys of linked heavy disruptor shots from a Battleship would have little effect only reducing the shields to 77.9 % in the initial assault. The fight from there would have been a free for all the Enterprise firing on whatever Romulan ship was close enough to target and was threatening it while the Klingon’s took advantage and targeted the Warbirds with all that they could. I guess that the Enterprise would have to retreat while the Klingon’s covered for them and the Klingon’s and Romulans would have lost at least one ship and have significant damage to systems. This would be the opening salvo in a Federation-Klingon-Romulan war that would eventually draw in the Cardassians and Ferengi empires that would make the Dominion War look tame.

This would have made a great alternate time line start.

Have you ever spent day in lawyers offices listening to petty relatives squabble? Don't run the other direction as fast as you can.

As for the ship it was either create a ship or shoot myself but they won’t let me carry a gun into the lawyer’s offices as they are afraid I might shoot one of them. On top of that they won’t let me drink so I thought about the Klingon ships and don’t remember seeing them so I build it in my head and then put it to paper and had the page saved in the computer between meetings. Yah, it is overkill but better the ship than the relative’s right… well maybe they will let me carry a baseball bat in?

between the Federation (which BTW has a few non-Federation vessels in the back), Cardasian, Klingon and Romulan Space Dock Recognition Manuals there is usually no need to do any write ups, but I find it cathartic to do a build.

    What Would Picard Do?

The Tatterdemalion King asked, “What Would Picard Do?” I don’t know I am more a Sisko kind of guy or Kirk, Cowboy diplomacy works for me. I have a very short fuse like when Sisko deck Q or Kirk punched the Klingon Captain Kang that is more me. I can go from zero to pissed off faster than a Porsche can go zero to sixty. I am better now at letting things just roll off as when I was in my teens and twenties.

As for building the ships I have a cheat I have a written up blank for each size that has the basics already written in and then the stuff that such as like a warp nacelle, Power systems, weapons, number of crew are already done. Here I will post a blank here so you can see. I start at the top and if I have the specs on the ship I put in what is what and then build around it till I end at the shields. Then I add up the power needs and then insert a power system and then run through lets say the Romulan, Cardassian or Klingon ship books to make it what it is. Then I finish with the SU’s calculations. After that I tweak it till I have a useable ship. I don’t know if this is the way others build their ships but this how it works well for me.

Here is the blank template for s size five ship so you can see some of the stuff is filled it already and that is the stuff that normally does not change.

I always assumed all the "oversize" BoPs were K'vorts.

  12. #12
Yes there are some that are K’Vort’s and the B’Rel’s and there is a smaller corvette class and then there is the D12 that is likely a between the Original Series and the Next Generation Era and the BOP that was in the Enterprise Era. More BOP’s than you can shake a stick at. Vistit http://www.ditl.org/ship-page.php?Cl...i&ListID=Ships or http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/ and look at the ship some have sizes and ex-astris-scientia has a good article on the BOP's that cover the different sizes that makes an interesting statement.

Actually if you keep the size balanced the BOP can be made to any size from 50 meters up to a Borg cube or larger.

Space Dock Klingon Recognition Manual also presents 2 separate write ups for the B'rel and K'vort. It is also stated that when the K'vort was designed the B'rel template was used but with all dimensions in creased.

From my research the D-12 is a B'rel variant retired in the 2350's.
    http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Klingon_Bird-of-Prey
The Klingon Recognition Manual also states that the D-12 is a B'rel (the most common) variant, page 22

Space Dock states B'rel-class vessels range in size from about 110m in length to about 175m, all should be considered Size 4 for game purposes.

Space Dock states K'vort-class vessels range in size from about 250m in length to about 700m, all should be considered Size 7 for game purposes.

If you look at Size in Space Dock (which is mostly based on vessel length) the B'rel is Size 4 (at 110m) or Size 5 (at 175m), and the K'vort is Size 5 (at 175m) or Size 9 (at 700m). It also states that Referee's can develop separate templates for all the different Size Birds-of-Prey if they so desire, and cite the differences are caused by individual House variants/preferences, House resource availability and other considerations.

When I get time I will do a updated (2381) K'tari-class Bird-of-Prey which Star Trek Renaissance mentioned, which is the 'modern' version of the B'rel built after the Dominion war which upgrades/refits the classic and iconic Klingon BOP with current technology.

Wave Man, the term "wave man" is the English translation of 'Ronin' (Japanese word) and literately translates to "wandering person" and in a modern context a WaveMan is one who is socially adrift or a SalaryMan who is between employers.

I knew the D-12 was a variant I was making the point that the size does not always stay the same. I look at it this way; each era of BOP is different, however looks alike and has different tech to it and slight changes to the characteristics of the combat usefulness. I would not like the idea of taking Commander Krug’s BOP up against the Enterprise-E but would easily take it up against the NX-class any day. I have made differences in the B’rel’s that can be from different Era’s or even in-between the eras. It could be little changes here and there and such. I also make changes that between houses the BOP’s are altered a little to the house’s preference. I have a collection of ready to go BOP’s some are twin warp core and others are single core while there are alterations in the weapons, cloaking devices and warp engines. I did this when we were running the Klingon series and there was a squabble between two houses and they both had the B’rel and K’Vort classes as their main ships and each had old D7’s and a few K’t’inga classes that were updated with variants. The story revolved around a single crew of an old B’rel class that had been outfitted with new gizmos and such. Maybe I will put the ships out in a collection as they make good cannon fodder.

I look forward to seeing what you came up with mate. The BOP is the most iconic Klingon vessel and should feature in almost every major Klingon campaign. I apologize if my post came off as smart-ass, not my intention, I was trying to expand on your post by adding information.
