Federation Coaxial Warp Drive testbed, NX-Savitr

One of the revolutionary technologies USS Voyager returned to Earth with was knowledge of the theoretical Coaxial Warp Drive. The Coaxial warp drive, also known as coaxial induction drive or simply coaxial drive, was a propulsion system that functioned by drawing in subatomic particles and reconfiguring their internal geometries. This allowed a starship the capability to fold the fabric of space, allowing it to travel instantaneously across extremely large distances. (VOY: "Vis à Vis"). By the 24th century, the concept of coaxial warp drive had been hypothesized by Starfleet engineers.

In 2374, an experimental coaxial warp ship was piloted by a shapeshifter with the ability to switch its DNA with another individual, in essence switching bodies. The shapeshifter and its ship was encountered by the crew of the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. At the time, the shapeshifter was pretending to be a Benthan named Steth and claimed that the ship was also of Benthan origin.

Emerging from coaxial space in an unstable condition, the vessel threatened to explode and collapse space within a radius of a billion kilometers. Such a catastrophe was averted, however, when Tom Paris, Voyager's helmsman, managed to generate a symmetric warp field around the coaxial warp ship, containing the instabilities in the space-folding core. The drive of the craft was imperfect, as particle instabilities tended to overload the engines. To correct for this flaw, Paris conceived of the idea of using a polaric modulator to dilute the particle stream as it entered the coaxial core, drawing inspiration from a 20th century device known as a carburetor.

Upon reading Tom Paris's report on the incident, utilizing all of the computer files (various scans of the Benthan Coaxial equipped ship) from Voyager and using what they had theorized StarFleet felt they had enough to develop a working model. After 5 years of R&D the NX-Savitr began Drive trials. The test bed vessel for this revolutionary drive was a newly commissioned Akira-class (launched early 2376) Heavy Cruiser. The NX-Savitr was named after the Hindu god of motion. Apart from the the addition of a Coaxial Warp Drive various systems were also upgraded or uprated. These systems include a Class 13/s warp core, isomagnetic EPS, a class 8/ex SIF and back-ups, an upgraded nacelle set up (6E9 nacelles, sustained speed uprating and variable geometry nacelles), a computer uprating (class beta), the addition of an auxiliary navigation deflector, a slightly better autopilot, installation of a EMH (MKII), improved TA/T/TS, installing an Astrometrics lab and adding several torpedo magazines.

First-Run Advanced Propulsion Drive (APD-01) designed by the ASDB. This lighter, high-power core utilizes swirl technology instead of a reaction chamber. Additional improvements to Plasma Transfer Conduit technology makes the drive system energy efficient and allows for the variable warp geometry evinced by its maneuverable nacelles. Improved verterion coil manufacture allows for smaller nacelles producing superior warp fields.

    Experimental Coaxial Warp Drive
Type 1 2ly/min (80pwr/rnd when in use) <75> (as an experimental unit this drive uses twice the amount of power of a perfected Class I Coaxial Drive)
*polaric modulator (10 pwr/rnd when drive is in use) <5>
*symmetric warp field co-ordinator (10pwr/rnd when drive is in use) <5>
**these two additions to the Coaxial Drive allows the drive to be operated more easily (and more safely), when the Coaxial Drive is active the Chief Engineer must make a Moderate (6) propulsion (coaxial warp drive) every minute. Failure indicates the drive breaks down; the ship cannot use the drive again until an engineer makes repairs (1-6 hours to make repairs). Dramatic failure results in catastrophic failure and causes 4d6 damage/rnd to the engine until it can be successfully shut down (SIF is the only protection against this damage) It takes 1d6 rnds to shut down the drive in the case of a catastrophic failure. If the drive takes more than 75su damage it explodes, destroying the ship, killing everyone on board and collapses space in an area with a billion-kilometer radius around the ship.

To prevent overloads the drive is only used in small 1 to 5 minute bursts (allowing the ship to travel anywhere from 2 ly to 10ly). For every minute after 5 minutes the propulsion (coaxial warp drive) test number is raised by 1 (upto a maximum of Challenging (10))

This vessel has two distinct FTL drives, a traditional warp drive and the experimental Coaxial Warp Drive. The ship uses its warp drive under normal circumstances, and the Coaxial as required.

The TIC is an operations center that is specifically for Flight Operations, conducting combat operations utilizing the Akira's Space fighter Wing, and sifting through the numerous sensor plots and intelligence gathered by the starfighters. A large room, and is fully manned through all duty shifts. During combat situations the Second Officer or the Space Fighter Wing Commander typically commands the TIC.
Primary Flight Operational Control of the Akira Class is provided by the TIC, located on decks A and B of the aft sail area. The TIC directly supervises all primary and secondary Flight Operations and coordinates all Flight, Search and Rescue, and Fighter-based activities.
The new TIC configuration is unique to the Akira class, and closely resembles a Starbase Bridge/Operations Center. The central area of the TIC provides a large holographic display, viewable from the entire TIC. Attached to the holoprojector are the TIC Chief’s console, and two consoles’ for his assistants. Identical in size and design to the bridge Mission Operations console, these consoles are the heart of the TIC.
Directly fore of the holoviewer are the Flight Ops Officers. The 8 FO Officers are equipped with a console that proceeds across the entire Foredeck, each with access to visuals of Flight Decks, Fighter craft, Shuttlecraft, along with Helm and Science information from the bridge. The FO's are in charge of maintaining full flight operation efficiency.

Variant, it was noted that if the Coaxial drive was omitted and it replaced with Ablative Armour (425) and all the other changes retained a very viable variant Akira could be fielded. Vessels fielded as such are known as Akira-A refits.

Another variant was also fielded it had all the refit options and carried a different load out of auxiliary craft
