    Question Rebuild?

My colleague and I had an argument today (well, perhaps more than one) about Bush and Giuliani saying that they want to rebuild the WTC.

She said, that it would be pointless, that noone would want to work in the building and that "they" would try again to destroy it.

But I refused to give up the thought, that it will be rebuild, even if it would be done only out of sheer spite.

What do you think? Should the WTC be rebuild or do you object to the idea?

I'm all for rebuilding, (or building if you like) a new, bigger, taller, better building. Only one condition: it should include a memorial.

Rebuilding the WTC would definitely throw mud in the face of the terrorists. And for that I would support it and show our defiance.

But your colleague made some valid points. The building was erected about 20 years ago in the 70's. Since then there have been many laws regarding new building regulations, and I am sure that since Tuesday, they will consider more regulations.

Granted, each of the two towers managed to survived the airline crash, as it was boasted for some time. But it was the fire and the tremendous heat from the full load of jet fuel that melted the structure at the areas of impact that cause the collapse minutes later.

And then there is the insurance. The premium is going to go sky-high that no one can afford it.

And not a lot of people are going to step or even work in a building that sit atop the site of death and destruction.

Like it or not, it would have to become a memorial park, a visible reminder of what happened to us, and like the Murrough Memorial Park, we will simply add nameplates of those hijackers' names in a small corner, as well as the nameplates of the conspirators who directly supported this crime against humanity ... when we execute them.

    Anyhoo, just some random thoughts...

Mmm...the way I'm feeling at the moment my emotions are overriding my normal desire for the application of equal law to all.

I'd like to see Bush instigate special, once-only Federal law that would allow the following punishment.

Those convicted of this will, on a heavily publicised day, be made to walk from one end of Manhatten Island to the other. If they reach the other end, they go free.

I can't see them getting there, myself...

Sorry - just shooting my mouth off 'cos I'm sleep-deprived, sad, angry and a few beers are doing their work...

Just to let you guys know, as well. Our Prime Minister has declared tomorrow a National Day of Mourning here in Oz, and has activated the ANZUS treaty for the first time in its 52 year history.

We don't have much to offer in the way of military support - we only have an army of about 25,000, a 100 plane air-force and a two-dozen-or-so combat ship navy...but the PM has said if it comes to it, we'll be doing our bit. Not that you'll need it, but the thought's there!

I think they should rebuild all the buildings. And I for one would work there. And if they destroy that building and I die, I'd hope that it would be built again and more people would work there. You can't let terrorists dictate your life. You have to stand up and say "you can't beat us, you can't break our spirit."

Judging by the spirit of the NY volunteers, they're going to rebuild and make the new towers bigger, better, and prouder than the old ones. I have no desire to live in any big city, but if they do rebuild, I'll go visit, stand at the top of the new building, and thumb my nose at every terrorist left alive in this world. By the time the new buildings are done, there might not be many of them left.

Here's an idea: a memorial park, much like they did for the Fed building in OK City.

Im with the Memorial Park or Structure idea, I have never been a huge fan of skyscrapers anyway... They look impressive from the ground up, but I got a fear of heights.

This design would send an appropriate message to the terrorists...

They won't rebuild it. The expense will be prohibitive, and the clean up's going to take way too long. Build a park with a memorial.

What would Peral Harbor be to Americans if the Arizona had been removed? Only a fiant memory and concept. No leave the ruin stumps of debris to stand as both marker and memorial to the event as it is quite likely there will still be many bodies left that will be unable to get to as grave. Let it serve to remain America of the price of compliancy and to allow future generations an opportunity to understand what happen there.

Well, since some of you are for rebuilding and some of you are for a memorial, a few of you have cleverly suggested a blend of the two.

Provided that the WTC Twin Towers are built with new regulations, including an improved fire (and smoke?) suppression system in case of an airline crash with loaded jet fuel, each tower should have a memorial museum built on the floor or floors where the airliners crashed through. A wall in each tower shall consist of the names of those killed in the attack which includes where they may have been initially working on what floor and what area. They should also have a memorabilia room which includes a wall or collage of paper debris ... because one of the more visible sight imprinted in my memory is the many papers that scattered throughout the area.

I'll leave the rest to you guys.
