FASA conversion Star Trek the Next Generation Officers Manual

    M’Benga Class VII Rescue/Hospital ship

I decided to do all the Star Trek The Next Generation FASA ship for the officers manual and year one sourcebook as they a little off here and there and with a little tweaking they can be some fine ships to add to any fleet.

So I started with the M’Benga Class for no special reason. As for looks, they are kind of funky nevertheless looks aren’t everything are they. Personally, I think that the M’Benga Class looks like a bug from the top? …the side? …well most near anyway I look at it. The Pasture from All Good Things looked like a ball for toeing a boat or trailer on a vehicle.

I used Combat Transporters and dropped the Emergency Transporters but they can be easily changed over if someone wanted to. Everything is canon with the exception I doubled the shields to give it some better protection if it gets into a fight. No one wants to be scrapping bug/ships goo of their phasers do they.

Let me know what you think

    Decker Class X Transwarp Destroyer

The Decker Class is weaker than the M’Benga class medical ship as it is constructed differently. Though it has strong shields it is powerful and a force to be reckoned with. I left the transwarp drive off as it is not exactly what fits the time. The shields are fifty percent stronger than the FASA version.

    Paine Class IX Frigate

The Paine class was the dawning that the majority of the ships were basically all the same with changes here and there only superficially making them look different. I started this project so I am determined to finish it one way or another. I guess later I will go back and tweak them to make them more individual ships as they are clones of one another.

So I started with the M’Benga Class for no special reason.
Why is a Hospital Ship so heavily armed? By tradition, Hospital Ships are unarmed. Protection is afforded by escort ships and, of course, the heaviest shields available. Frankly, most FASA ships are outlandish fanboy wet dreams and ugly "kitbashes" to boot. FASA was an innovative game for its time - I ran it for over a decade - but it's badly dated. Converting FASA ships to Spacedock is a noble effort - I've done a few myself - but many badly need rethinking. FASA's staff were particularly bad at estimating sizes based on the profile drawings.

Five Type VIII phaser arrays and a single small spread standard yield torpedo launcher is hardly 'heavily armed" IMHO, all the contemporary combat orientated vessels of the period (any of the Perimeter Defense and the light and heavy Explorers all start with at least Type X phasers and multiple torpedo launchers) are far more heavily armed and I think it is about where it should be. Compared to the Olympic Class it is only slightly more heavily armed (the Olympic has 4 Type VI phasers) so not really a big step up in power from my perspective, plus it does have a 'rescue' element in the class description alluding to the fact that it may have to enter combat situations as part of its expected mission profile.

In regards to Federation hospital ships, the following dialogue from 'All Good Things' is relevant:

    Future - USS Pasteur Bridge

    PICARD: What's going on?
    CRUSHER: We're under attack.
CHILTON: Shield strength down to fifty two percent. Minor damage to the port nacelle.
WORF: Two Klingon attack cruisers decloaking to port and starboard.
CRUSHER: Warp speed. Get us out of here.
    CHILTON: Warp power's offline, sir.
CRUSHER: Heading one four eight, mark two one five. Full impulse.
CHILTON: Impulse power's fluctuating. Shields down to thirty percent.
    PICARD: Weapons status?
WORF: These weapons are no match for their shields.
Now, this is from a future where the RSE is gone and any future equivalents of Earthly Geneva Conventions may not apply, meaning a 'hospital ship' may not be recognized as such by potential aggressors, but that certainly may be true for ships expected to operate on the frontiers in TNG's era as well.

There's also a potential utility to phasers as a precise means of opening holes for transport signals, as demonstrated in 'Legacy.'

Hey, this takes me back! Looking for a place to share my FASA to Coda starship conversions is what lead me to these forums many seasons ago.

As others have pointed out, FASA is a little dated ruleswise, but it will always have a place in my heart.
Crimson Hand Gamers...why have your own site when there's Facebook?

These conversions are not exactly accurate to that of the way things should be. If you look at the Pasture from the Next Generation episode of all good things it shows that it has phaser array strips on the hull.

This conversion is as close as you can get using the FASA to Icon conversion that was at a web site that has long gone away. It is weapons are multiplies by 1.6 shields are done by 2.4 and that is the conversion that I use. I then build a ship up from there using the data that is provided in the FASA write up generating a ship. I would give the address to the site but I do not even remember the name all I know is that the site has been gone for years. Each of these ships are armed as they would have been in the FASA version. i know that there use to be a link on the home entrance page that has gone dead but could still be in the Wayback machines storage if someone wanted to look it up.

It is just a project that I under took while the groups is off enjoying the summer weather and such and I am free to play with starship designs for coming adventures that Dave and I are planning.

FASA version of the Ambassador class Heavy Cruiser

Not as much wiggle room as some of the others but still makes a nice little ship but would rename it if using it in a series where there is already an Ambassador class starship. There is traces of the Galaxy class in this design but the Galaxy class out stretched this ship by leaps and bounds.

as I noted above the Olympic-class Medical vessel (page 100 Spacedock Ship Recognition manual) was armed with 4 type VI phaser arrays, so it is not unprecedented for dedicated hospital ships to have some sort of armament, and as TTK pointed out phasers have other applications outside of combat so I personally think it is appropriate for any hospital ship to have some sort of armament.

the only changes I would have made for the M’Benga Class VII Rescue/Hospital ship is to add in at least 1 more hospital (so 2 rating 10 facilities, it is a hospital ship after all) as that only adds 50su and provisions for more shuttlecraft, for the mass transport of casualties via shuttles when transporters are inappropriate. There is over 300 su still available and even if you add another 130su (1 more hospital [50su] and another shuttle bay with 20 shuttle {sc2 shuttles} capacity [80su]) you still have plenty left for upgrades later on.

All that I can say about FASA is it is kind of Whacked when it comes to their ship designs. They convert over ok but the TNG era ships are just a little off their marks. At least that is my take on it.

Yet you have to show the respect that they were the first Star Trek RPG that I know of. We used it for years before the Last Unicorn came along and then integrated much of the best that we liked of FASA into to our generation and creation and when Decipher came along took what was best about it and integrated it in and still use a hybrid version of all three converting over everything to this hybrid. This mixture includes Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, Conan, Star Wars, and Babylon 5 ingredients into a working system.

a hybrid system is the best IMHO, if you can get it to mesh and work, you take the best elements of several systems and end up with a custom gaming system tailored to your specific needs and group. My motto is go with what works, and if you can get it to work then run with it.

I actually really like the ships in the 1st ed rulebook (Loknar, Larson, Derf, etc) but the TNG ships looked like a rush job.

Don't get me wrong, FASA has done some great looking ships for the Original Series Era but they just done cut it when they hit the Next Generation Era some look kind of odd is a nice way of saying it. I have visted sites some that have build FASA type ship for the Next Generation Era that are good. There is one that is called the Star Trek Tactical Combat Similator ( the web site is http://www.ststcsolda.space/ ). And then there is http://fasaststcs.com/ that has TNG era ships that are good as the creator has tweaked them nicely and created ships that are useable and looks to be expanded on the construction notes. When you have time check them out. i know that there are others out there but have changed adresses and my links have gone unupdated.

I've actually done some sketches of the Envoy, Wellington and M'Benga classes in an attempt to make them look like Probert or Rodis designed them. I really should scan those and post them somewhere...
