[2d20] 23rd Century Threat Vessels: The Orions

These next three threat ships are from the Orion sphere of influence.

    They include:
    Lightning-class Blockade Runner
    Wanderer-class Blockade Runner
    Class III Tanker

For these classes, I've created a new talent.

    Highly Modular Design
Each ship of this class is often customized by its owners, each vessel becoming unique in its qualities. When you gain ownership of this vessel, you may:

    1. Choose Phaser or Disruptor banks for your beam weapons, and whether or not your ship is armed with them at all.
    2. Choose to carry or not carry Photon Torpedoes
    3. Receive the benefit of a refit.
    4. Increase one System by 1 and reduce a different System by 1.
    5. Increase one Department by 1 and reduce a different Department by 1.
    6. No System may be increased by more than 4 from the original design's model (this replaces the limit of 2 in the refit rules).

I strongly recommend this only be allowed for GM-controlled ships, to reflect highly-modified nature of many pirate and smuggler ships.

A "well-armed courier," as the Orions euphamistically describe it, the Lightning-class "blockade runner" was built to carry small, valuable cargoes. Built for speed over strength, the Lightning is powered by a "version" of the PB-32 Mod 3. Some 50-60 Lightnings were built in the 2250s for legitimate interests; Orion Sector Intelligence estimates that at least that many were also built at secret facilities for less scrupulous faction of the Colonies.

The Wanderer-class light cruiser (classified as a blockade runner by the Federation) was actually built for the protection of legitimate Orion "royal" interests. While many ships ended up in a "privateer" role, the Wanderer has been nicknamed "the Orion K'tinga" for its combat capability. A sleek vessel inspired by Federation designs, the Wanderer mounts its weaponry on two pods that sit amidships below the main hull.

The design is so popular that several Federation interests have purchased Wanderers for everything from merchant fleet protection to royal yachts.

Almost as soon as the Class III tanker was on the market in 2240, Orion engineers were stripping models down and turning out everything but tankers. Heavily modified, the former Class IIIs were rebuilt to end user specifications.

A nearly-perfect cover for illegal operations, the Orion-modified Class IIIs have proven difficult for the Federation to differentiate from their more mundane sisters.

Note that this class is not the "merchantman" from Star Trek III (Valkris' ship), but the same class as the fictional Kobayashi Maru from Star Trek II.

Those things look close together statwise; - meh, they're fine, but Im clearly focusing more on several ovler systems...

Unfortunately, I think that's a product of the design guidelines. The average ship of the 2250s has only 1 more point in the sum of its Systems values than the average ship of the 2240s. All contemporaries will have similar sums.

Nice nod to the old Star Fleet Battle's Orions and their option mounts
A brave little theory, and actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one.
