Thread: Character names

    Question Character names

I may be the only one, but I have a terrible time coming up with character names, especially Bajorans, Klingons and some of the other races.

Does anyone have any pointers? Any catch-all name generators or the like?

    For normal names: phone book.

For other names, sometimes transposing a few letters or reversing the spelling of a name works.

I've never really had trouble with coming up with names, myself. Hope these suggestions help.

Well, for Klingon males, names that sound like, gutteral noises are good. I've also noticed that Klingon felames usually have names with two or three sylables (Lursa, B'tor, B'ehlana).

    Question

    How about

    Bajorans?
    Bolians?
    Andorians?
    Vulcan males?

What I have done in the past (and what I've seen both Trek writers and LUGTrek writers do as well) is variations of canon names.

Such as Daimon "Fog" who appeared in RR&R. Or the endless amount of "K" names for Klingon (Kor, Koloth, Kruge, Kluge, etc) in TOS.

For instance a common enemy I have planned for my game (whatever it turns out to be) is Tevek the Romulan which I altered from Tuvok from Voyager.

Cheezy I know but it works.

2 years ago, I was lurking around in the Transporter Room on the main page and found a great site with a ton of names. They were all broken down by race and the first 10 or 20 of each huge list were "show names." I think it was the site with the really cool Ferengi adventure listed first. Yes, pretty vague, but I did find the site and I started from here.

Any of the above ring a bell with anyone?

    How about 'Sarta Karyn'...

Bajoran 'given names' in this case Karyn, seem to sound similar to Human names in many cases, while their family names, as an alien species should sound odd, without being too off the wall... A good rule of thumb for most 'Human alien of the week'...

Can anyone remember the formulka for Joke Star Wars names that was going around a few years back? Sounds like it could come in useful...

Andorian names: go to the back of the Andorian sourcebook by the estemed S John Ross. There's some Graleen in there. I've gone through and made up some names that would be common.

MEN: Ghaelv, Gholev, Shaka, Shasa, Amberiat, Jotha

FEMALE: Felia, Afela, Fela (all variant on passion), Lira, Ilara, Akola

I think for the Bajoran, I'll go with Tarya Apar

I kinda like puns when I can think of them

For Bajoran's I sometimes just take Earth names and reverse them...example...

My best friend as a child was named Steve Kerr.

In Star Trek he is a Bajoran Vedek named Nevets Rrek.

Also one on my favs is my Bajoran smuggler Kanth Dabari, but his name was made by a friend back in High School when we played Star Wars too much
