Stupid question time! What are "starship counters"?
Well... a long time ago
In a game room far far away.
Before Computers fit in a room.
People played wargames like Starfleet Battles and Tactics II.
The little carboard (egad!!!) pieces which represented the starships and other units were called "counters".
BTW I still use my SFB counters and mapboards to run starship combat, 1 hex is 1 MU.

I was searching various gaming sites and found one that has starship counters you may find useful. The address is www.geocities.com/graylingnator/ I downloaded them and printed them up and they look pretty nice even though they are in black and white. You can always take a colored pen to them. They are in the Playing Aids section. Anyway, if anyone is intrested, take a look.

Shit! They took the scans of all those filthy B&W ship pics across the net!<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by Dexter Knight:

Captain Zymmer,
Making shartship counters is very easy, if you have the right software. I use PaintShop Pro. With it I can take a scanned image, or even a screen capture. From there I just cut & past in onto an existining blank counter that I can print off to the desired scale. Orignally I did this to make counters that matched the rather large FASA ship counters, since with 4 copies of that game I had lots of large sized hex maps and ship. It would be possible to print smaller counters (say Star Fleet Battled sized), but you would loose some detail. Of course considering ship movement rates-especially for Spacedock, the smaller counters might be desiredable since you get a larger hexfield.
From there you just print the counter off on "lable" paper and attack to carboard and cut out.
Assuming you take your time, get a hi-res image, and a good printer, you can get counters that look pretty good.
Here is a link for a sample of an Akira class counter. Since the image that I used for the counter is availble all over the net, I figure one more image on a hex isn't going to cause any problems. Go to

I'm Working on a new counter sheet. I'm using Photoshop 6. I found color scans of top views of just about every starship I could find. I plan on putting them on 1 inch hexes, big enough for some detail but not too big. So far I have Galaxy, Akira, Ambassador, Defiant, Soveriegn, B'Rel, Vor'Cha, Neg'Vhar, D'Deridex, Cardassian, and Jem Hadar ships. I'll be printing them out on card stock. Maybe even mount them on wire stands... oh the days of table top SFB matches. I'll really ry to finish it up if anyone wants a copy. It'll be a JPG file.

Making countersheets is fairly easy. If you insist on a top-down view of the ship, the images get harder to find.
Point me to images you want to use, tell me what dpi and size you would like the result to be, and I'll see what I can do.
I mean, we're just talking about a picture on a hex, right?
I'f you're willing to settle for side-views, I've already scanned the ship pages of the Encyclopedia.
