Hi all
Any more news on a Decipher Trek release after Steve Long's cryptic comments i.e. two Trek books in August/September?
Long Tom
That was a guesstimate from long ago. That schedule doesn't apply any more. I think we're now looking at releasing both books simultaneously in October or November, but I'm not certain, since I haven't spoken with anyone about scheduling recently.
Stay tuned, and as soon as there's information available for release, no doubt Don will release it here post-haste.

Ok, Steve
Thanks for clearing that up

Hi,
I'm new to the boards, and very interested in getting into the Star Trek RPG. I'm toying with the idea of buying the TNG and DS9 LUG products either on eBay for (hopefully) less than the hefty cover price of $35 or from a local gaming store for the full price (if I end up cracking and break down and rush to buy them). First, however I wanted to get an idea of the ease of play using the ICON rules system (or extreme complexity), and get as many opinions as to the ICON system as possible. Please feel free to post and or email me at kinkade@hotmail.com your impressions, likes, and dislikes with regards to the rules system and the game. I will probably end up running a game for friends who might not have that much role-play experience, but an interest in the Star Trek universe(s), but will hopefully be able to play a character of my own at some point, so feelings for both sides of the game, player and narrator, would be greatly appreciated.
Also, what exactly are the first two books that Decipher will be releasing? A Core Rules book and a Players Guide? Will the Cor rules book have rules for each show, Voyager, TNG, DS9, etc?
Thanks for any help and advice. I'm still not sure if I should give in to my impatience and get the LUG books for a Trek fix, or wait for Decipher to finally release the new books.
Thanks again, and have a great day.
DL
I would have thought any LUG book would be more expensive online than instore, but since I've seen many of them instore recently, I don't know.
If you were to choose one or the other, I'd be the first to tell you get TNG and not DS9. DS9 is put together better, and some consider the two nearly identical, but I prefer the TNG book because of the series specific background material and I prefer the TNG feel. You may prefer the DS9 feel, and you seem to have decided on both, so what am I flapping my gums about?
My opinion regarding ease of play is obviously not the best one, since I've never understood the rules of any RPG well enough to run one. I have, however, come closer to understanding Icon than any other system.
What I mainly buy RPGs for is the source material, and in that category I highly recommend Icon. I like it best out of it, Prime Directive, and FASA, in that order. I also like it considerably better than West End Star Wars, DC Heroes, and D&D, and a little better than Wizards Star Wars.
I'm fairly certain that the first two Decipher books will be a narrator rulebook and a player rulebook. These core rules should be applicable to any Trek show or era.
If you can get the Icon books cheap, my opinion is do so, but it would also make sense to wait and start with Decipher.

Games. The Final Product. These are the books of the Star Trek RPG. Their five year license. To explore strange new roles. To breathe new life into get togethers. To boldly play what no fan has played before!
You can get the TNG LUG core book on eBay for a lot less than in the stores. I think I paid about $10 for my copy. (Of course, I couldn't stop there, so factor in the Narrator's toolkit, Player's Guide, Way of D'Era, Way of Kohlinar, Price of Freedom and First Line... so far...)
I'm not obsessed or anything...
Of course you're not obsessed. I have all the IconTrek books. I payed basically full price for all of them. Some of them are on topics I'm not even interested in. I'm obviously not obsessed.

Nah, I'm just poor![]()
I am in fact _very_ obsessed. With the help of one of the members of this board, I found a store that sells the LUG Trek books at discount, so this coming week I should be going where many have gone before and indulge my Trek-side. I ended up ordering the TNG Core book, the DS9 Core book, the Mercenaries, Rogues and stuffbook, and the DS9 narrators toolkit. It'll be a start to a beautiful game-ship.
What's the TNG Players Guide like? A necessity, or a nice extra?
Thanks to the posts and emails, they have all been helpful and appreciated.
Thank you very much,
DefiantLover
TNG Players' Guide is widely regarded as one of the "must have" books. Inside are new species templates, lots of advanced schools and packages, info on making command characters, how to create enlisted characters, lots of new psionic powers, new advantages and disadvantages, plus a sample setting for your TNG game.
Of course my opinion may be slightly colored since I wrote parts of it, but it's a good book nonetheless.

Not meaning any offense to Don. I class it as a nice extra. Lots of good stuff, but nothing that you can't get along without. My favourites are the new schools and extra templates, and the somewhat expanded section on Starfleet awards, what can I say I like the nice shiney tinsle.
It is a very well put together book, I would get one myself but I can't find one in the store. Every time I think of asking a friend who has a copy if he is interested in selling it, he gets into a new game.Oh, well.

Now, why didn't we think of that for the title?

I'd call the Players Guide the closest thing to must- have other than the three core books. My favorite parts of it are the species templates and the sample sector.

Hands down the PLayer's Guide is the best book I have ever seen for any RPG, and I anot blowing smooke here.
I hope you guys top it with Decipher.
Or make a Volume 2 or something
