    Post Goblin-class Fleet Tug

Another of the unsung heroes of Starfleet. Of course these are the real navy, those prima donnas in their Akiras, Galaxies and Sovereigns are just a bunch of prissy good-for-nothing, work shy glory hounds who get to saunter around the universe whilst we .....(mutter) .... (grumble) ..... (harumph)

    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The Goblin-class Fleet Tug has often been described as one of the graceful looking vessels in Starfleet, an appearance the belies it's rugged strength. The saucer section is some 50% wider than it is long and is mounted directly onto the front of the engineering section where the navigational deflector is placed in other Starfleet designs. The deflector is mounted directly in the tip of the saucer's nose with the forward impulse engine ports mounted on either side. Streamlined sponsons fitted on the side of the engineering hull hold the 2 main impulse engines towards the rear of the ship, merging forward into the saucer section. The 4 small warp nacelles are mounted on retractable pylons angled forward from the rear of the impulse engines. During atmospheric flight, landing and close quarters towing work the nacelles are retracted to prevent damage.
The Goblin-class is a tough little design mounting excessive SIF and hull bracing to allow for the strain of towing vessels far larger than itself. It also helps when bumping into heavy masses, whether intentionally or not. It is often joked that a Goblin could be run over by a Borg Cube, picked up, dusted down and be back at work with no more than a few scuffs and nicks. In 2373 the warp drive was upgraded to the current Type 5E6 model, adding the 2 ventral nacelles, so as to enable the Goblin-class vessels to keep up with the fleet and to be able to quickly tow crippled ships away from danger. The only change to the tactical systems to accompany this more dangerous role was to upgrade the shield protection to the maximum available for Class 2 generators, otherwise the Goblin-class remains unchanged.

    DEVELOPER'S NOTES
The ramming hull isn't really intended to be used for ramming. It represents the extra bracing required for a tug, although it provides the standard (and dubious) benefits of a ramming hull. The forward facing impulse engine is intended to give the Goblin-class greater control of towing large loads allowing it to more easily brake without having to manoeuvre. By the way, the retractable nacelles don't retract as such they sort of close up X-Wing style although this doesn't provide any performance benefit hence they're not variable-geometry.

Probably a bit big for a tug, even one with a "Fleet" designation, but I have problems imagining anything smaller hauling around a Size 7+ ship. Plus it could also be used for towing completed space stations and such. And small moons.

The best thing about them is that Starfleet once tested the joke about being run over by a Borg Cube by building a replica cube. To make it fair in comparison the cube also had to run over "Weasely" Crusher. After the tests there was good news & bad news: the bad news was that the Goblin tug had a couple of dents as well as the scuffs & scratches, thus disproving the joke; the good news was that "Weasely" was mashed to a pulp.

That should be 2 SU for the 20 Basic quarters & 2 SU for the 10 Expanded quarters, not 4 & 10 respectively. This gives a total SU used of 1072, not 1082.

Note to self: Must not cut-and-paste so much!

    And that's 20 escape pods, not 2! D*mn, d*mn, d*mn!!!! I'm going to sulk now.

Hey, don't worry about it. There are so many numbers to juggle it's easy to make mistakes. No harm, no foul, as they say.

But of course, if it happens again, we are going to sic the rabid wombat commandoes on you...

A bit fast and well armed for a tug wouldn't you say? Even a Fleet one.
    Perhaps max warp7-8
    and phasers of type 3-4

    Question

Aren't tugs operating from starbases? Why would it need warp speed? I suppose you could say that the tug needs it for emergency pick-ups

The Rabid Wombat Commandoes? Hah! Your puny threats do not frighten me, for I am protected by the Diabolical Cats of Perdition and a spider called George.

    afraser:
The Goblin is warp capable because there would be occasions when you're going to have to tow large, lumpy things between systems such as prefabricated bases, ship hulks, etc. You'd probably only have a couple per sector/whatever because normal interstellar loads could be handled by transports like the Deneva-class & interplanetary loads by non-Warp tugs.

    SIR SIG:
I based the speed on the Deneva-class with a slight upgrade due to the later technology & the Fleet designation (it has to keep up with the fronline forces now) plus the idea that the Goblin is a bit overpowered since it often has to tow heavy loads which I'd have reducing it's speed. The weaponry is what I'd consider normal for a non-combat vessel, see the Deneva, Olympic & Danube.

Oh & that should be 192 power from the 3 impulse engines giving 491 total. Sigh. I bet 'Kelly' Johnson never had this problem.

Small Fuzzy Guardian of the Universe? Hmmm. Is that with or without the optional Mighty Paw of Smiting?

    Oh, with. Definitely with.

Also the ability to catch all naps that intrude into the household -- thereby preventing them from reaching me so that I can get work done.

Diabolical Cats of Perdition, eh? Well, my cat has been designated Small Fuzzy Guardian of the Universe, so I'm pretty sure we can take your fiendish felines, even with the spider thrown in.
