    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The second design in Merlin-class family of small vessels, the Terrier-class Light Escort is intended for a variety of light combat roles and is in effect Starfleet's answer to the Dominion Attack Ship and Hideki-class Fighter. Like others in it's family, the design is very similar in appearance to the Cheyenne-class and consists of a D-shaped saucer, with a deep ventral bulge to hold the navigational deflector, and a short engineering hull which mounts the 4 variable-geometry warp nacelle pylons. The impulse engines pods are mounted at the rear of the saucer on either side of the small engineering hull and not only are larger than those on the Merlin-class due to the heavier main engines but are fitted with highly directional thruster nozzles to improve the sub-light manoeuvrability.
Like the Merlin the Terrier-class is highly automated, carrying only 15 crew in peacetime conditions. In addition a number of the primary systems are fitted with extensive backups, including an auxiliary navigational deflector in the dorsal section of the engineering hull and a tiny reserve impulse engine, smaller than standard shuttle engines, mounted with one thruster at the root of each warp pylon.
The shield output has been boosted to the maximum that a Class 3 generator can handled and is further enhanced by the upgrade of the shield grid to Class Beta. Weaponry has also upgraded with a substantial pulse phaser array fitted on the front of the saucer, with the twin cannons projecting forwards like the horns of a Terran manta ray. The secondary phaser array is mounted in the new fashion being trialed by Starfleet on some of it's smaller vessels and consists of an hourglass-pattern mounted dorsally & ventrally that crosses over at the bow at the waist of the hourglass. This unusual pattern allows the array to cover the full field of fire around the vessel, albeit at the loss of any redundancy afforded by separate dorsal and ventral systems.
To make space for these enhancements, compared with the baseline Merlin-class, the Terrier-class has weaker sensors and warp drive, thereby removing the stress problem at high speed, plus less capable medical and science facilities and computer systems.

    DEVELOPER'S NOTES
Although my shuttle-sized fighters might soothe my desires for X-Wing attacks on Borg Cubes , this design IMHO is the closest sort of vessel to a fighter that Starfleet might come up with given it's philosophy and the technical limitations.

    Pads: 6
Emitter/Receiver Array: Personnel Type 6 (40000 km range)
    Energizing/Transition Coils: Class H (Strength 8)
    Number and Location: (1) Forward
    Type: Emergency [7 Power / use] <17>
    Pads: 24
Emitter/Receiver Array: Emergency Type 3 (15000 km range)
    Energizing/Transition Coils: Class H (Strength 8)
    Number and Location: (1) Amidships
    Type: Personnel [4 Power / use] <22>
    Pads: 400 kg
Emitter/Receiver Array: Cargo Type 3 (15000 km range)
    Energizing/Transition Coils: Class G (Strength 7)

    The third entry should read:
    Type: Cargo

Same as before, but the third version is fine.

As per the Merlin-class (guess who used cut & paste) I got the wrong SU cost for the cargo transporters. Design edited & should now be OK.

I like it very much. About six months when we were discussing Star Fighters, I argued that the small ships that they used to attacked the Dominion Fleets were Light Escorts instead.
However, I do think that a small ship like would useful as the equivalent of WWII Motor Torpedo Boat and a whole campaign could be written about the adventures of a crew of one of these Ships.

Keep up the good work there Swampy.
