    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The Trillpa-class Heavy Escort follows the traditional Vulcan forward-swept tri-nacelle design such as that used by the scout ship that established first contact with mankind. First commisioned back in the 60s the class has been steadily updated and is now the single most numerous design in the VDF due to excellent flexibility, adaptability and ease-of-maintenance. The Trillpa has also proven popular with many other Federation members and export versions are often produced with refitted enviromental systems and crew facilities.
The warp pylons extend from the rear of the single-piece main hull, one mounted ventrally and the other pair dorsally, all equidistant around the hull, and angle forwards so that the nacelles are about three-quarters of the way along the hull. Unlike many other Vulcan designs the nacelles don't extend beyond the main hull, this allows the main forward phaser array mounted on cobra-head shaped bow to have an exceptional dorsal field of fire as well as covering the entire forward arc. Each pylon has a large streamlined pod at it's base, with the dorsal pods pointing towards the bow and each mounting a torpedo launcher at the front and two of the four impulse thrusters at the rear. The ventral pod is mounted blunt-end first so that it's torpedo launcher fires aftward and with a navigational deflector replacing the impulse engine. The Trillpa is fairly unique for starships able to land on planets in that it is able to use it's variable geometry pylons to land either horizontally on it's belly or vertically on it's tail, with the pylons moving so as to allow the appropriate landing pads to make contact with the ground. By preference the vessel is landed on it's belly, but if space is a problem or a fast launch is required then a tail-first landing is performed, in the latter case it's not advisable to be standing nearby at launch since the shockwaves produced by the main impulse engines blasting off are highly destructive.
Although designated a Heavy Escort so as acknowledge it's small size and primary combat role the Trillpa-class is also commonly used as a research vessel or a police patrol vessel, with highly advanced science and security systems installed in all ships in the class. The excellent medical facilities and relatively high evacuation capacity plus the large number of heavy tractor beams and emergency transporters also mean that the class can perform rescue and medevac missions. The individual crew quarters are considering very sparse by non-Vulcan standards, although to compensate the communal recreation facilities are superb for a combat vessel of such a small size.
