DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The Gellar-class Escort Carrier is a derivative of the Terrier-class Light Escort and mounts many of the same systems. Two large pods are attached ventrally on either side of the main navigational deflector, extending beyond the saucer to the front and sides, whilst towards the rear they merge into the engineering hull. These pods are configured to hold additional hanger space and each is fitted with a launch tube at the front. Connecting through to the standard aft shuttlebay in the engineering hull, the complete hanger area forms a horseshoe shape and is capable of holding upto 12 shuttles-sized craft, an amazing number for such a small vessel. Normally carrying a mix of combat and support craft, Gellar class vessels are often used to ferry shuttles and shuttlepods between bases.
Whilst the dorsal phaser array is standard for a Merlin-family design, the hanger pods have forced the ventral array to be substituted for a pair of strips, one per pod, with each covering one half of the ventral arc. To keep mass down the torpedo launcher has been removed and the space converted into a larger magazine for resupplies for the fighter complement.
The biggest problem with the class is that the quarters are severly overloaded due to the requirement to carry the small craft crew. Each suite is generally double occupied and during times when the vessel is acting as a troop transport upto 6 occupants may be crammed into each room.
DEVELOPER'S NOTES
The aft shuttlebay is generally only used to recover craft although it is perfectly capable of launching as well, thus the maximum simultaneous launch is 3 shuttles/fighters. The 2 launch bays aren't really designed for landings and it would be a very tricking task for a shuttle to land in one, although shuttlepods should find it easier. Note that the hangers are very cramped & the class dosn't have the flight operations endurance of larger carrier-type vessels.
