    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES

I have always enjoyed role-playing and narrating in the PRE-TOS period. Unfortunately, I just don't like the Ranger Class Explorer found on page 142 of the TOS Core Book. The Baton Rouge Class Cruiser, mentioned in a few sources (canon and otherwise) is my choice to replace the Ranger Class. I just assume the U.S.S. Ranger was a vessel of this class.
As an explorer, the Baton Rouge Class represents the best of Starfleet at the time. I assume that many of these ships played a crucial role in the hostilities with the Klingons as well as in exploration, diplomacy, and first contact situations.
I am preparing a small SRM for 2215-2245 and the Baton Rouge Class represent the top vessel during the initial years of this time period. The planning is almost done on the Comanche Class light cruiser, the Hale Class Scout, the Apache Class (frigate or escort?) as well as the Klingon D-3, D-4, and D-5's. I welcome any comments to help me perfect the ships of this period. Of course, when the TOS SRM comes out, I will update all of my ships. If you love the PRE-TOS like I do, join me in filling out the ranks of ships and situations for this time period.

"Unfortunately, I just despise the "Ranger Class Explorer" found on page 142 of the TOS Core Book. Just attaching the engineering hull "upside-down" to the saucer section is almost offensive to any Star Trek fan's intellect."

No, only those ignorant of Trek history. That design is a tip of the hat to Matt Jefferies, who came up with it as his "next to final" design for the Enterprise. A small cardboard and balsa model was made, but when it was hung from a string to display it, it stubbornly decided to hang upside down. The Great Bird liked the upside down version, which became the official version. Other early Enterprise designs which have cropped up are the so-called Declaration Class and the Daedalus Class.

If you don't like the design, fine, but I really think you arrogate to much unto yourself when you claim anything you don't like is an insult to all right-thinking Trek fans.

Now, on the other tentacle, I also like the Baton Rouge Class from the Goldstein/Sternbach Spaceflight Chronology. I see it as a perfect crossover between the Daedalus and Constitution eras

    Unhappy

I stand completely corrected. I did not know that the Ranger Class was a Matt Jefferies conceptual design. I had just assumed someone spent very little time and creativity cutting-and-pasting a ship to fall between the Daedalus and the Constitution classes. I am very sorry. I will change my comments.

Yes but the Declaration class is also a tip of the hat to Matt Jefferies concept design which became (kind of) the Ranger.

Owen, which model/drawing would be the Declaration class?

The so-called Declaration Class is the one with the two rings at the back and the long Klingon-style boom seen in the Rec Deck "shrine" in STTMP. It was dubbed the Declaration Class by the Goldsteins for the Spaceflight Chronology. Both the Rec Deck painting and the book illo were done by Rick Sternbach. Some of the books by Judith and Garfeild Reeves-Stevens incorrectly indicate this to be from another production, but the dates on the reproduced Matt Jefferies drawings show it to be a Star Trek design.
