DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The Atlirith-class Strike Frigate is the pride and joy of the Andorian Defence Force and due to leasons learned in the recent Dominion War has just entered a series of refits to improve it's combat capabilities further. Designed in the early 60s the class appears very similar to it's namesake, the Andorian Eagle. Like many ADF vessels, the Atlirith is heavily combat orientated with the traditional Andorian heavy torpedo armament and the capacity to carry a strong contingent of combat troops who are aided in boarding operations by the exceptionally large transporter systems. The class also has a small carrier capabiliy and generally carries 4 fighters in it's shuttlebays although these can be replaced by combat shuttles to support troop landing operations.
Originally mounting warp nacelles at the end of it's wingtips, these have now been embedded into the hull to reduce their vulnerability to hostile fire and their place has been taken by weapons pods each mounting a a pair of small torpedo launchers, one forward and one aft, with the former being an advanced model capable of firing high-yield torpedoes. Another pair of advanced torpedo launchers are mounted forward, one in the brow of the "skull" and the other in the "chest", this gives the Atlirith-class the capability of firing upto 4 Type VI heavy torpedoes in a single salvo. The magazines carry 40 of these impressive weapons, 10 apiece for the forward launchers, with the remaining torpedoes normally Type IXs and it is planned that quantum torpedoes will be carried as soon as stocks become available.
The phaser armament is heavily biased towards forward firepower with the forward dorsal array mounted as a stretched elipse down the spine of the vessel and over the curved, beak-like bow. The forward ventral array runs along the leading edge of both wings and then follows a condensed sine-wave pattern running fore and aft where the two halves meet on the main hull to widen the ventral firing arc. In contrast, the small aft array is a simple strip running along the edge of the flaired tail-like structure that separates the dorsal and ventral shuttlebays. The navigational deflector is a novel bi-polar design, consisting of a pair of small dishes mounted on either side of the bow giving the vessel the appearance of eyes, an intentional cosmetic effect to emphasise the eagle-like hull structure.
As well as moving the warp nacelles and two-thirds of the torpedo launchers, another major change in the refit is the installation of ablative armour, with the class being only the second non-Starfleet design authorised to use this technology, the first being the ADF Atlira-class Escort.
Starfleet and ADF engineers are currently conducting intergration trials with pulse phasers, mounting cannon taken from a Defiant-class Escort in the wing weapons pods of the ADS Ushos. This modification has also required the warp core output to be upgraded to compensate for the pulse phasers greater power needs and if the trials are successful all vessels in the class will be refit again to include these changes.
DEVELOPER'S NOTES
It does feel a little Romulan in hull-shape to me, but I figure the Andorians would overlook this to have a class named after their beloved Eagles.

Unfortunately my artistic ability is roughly comparable to an ungifted house brick.
To make this design easier to visualise check out the piccy of the Atlilirth (the actual bird version) in the Andorian book. I visualised my vessel as looking like that except no legs, reduced feathering on the wings, flattened cylindrical pods on the wingtips and a shorter, & again less feathery, tail.
Sarge:
I'll probably have a go at an Andorian fighter design & maybe the small craft, although I expect the Andorians would be more willing to accept the standard SF shuttles/shuttlepods rather than come up with their own designs. After all a trash hauler is just a trash hauler.
Well you can't get more close cropped than embedded nacelles! Seriously, I was going by the LUG vessels rather than the FASA books for this.
As for the redesign, go ahead by all means.
re the torps, the pods are fairly large, maybe around nacelle size, and hold the 2 launchers plus 10 Type VIs & 60 Type IXs, with the latter being shared by both.
By the way nobody picked up my "deliberate" mistake (Ahem ) of having the high-yield Type VIs as the standard load for the aft tubes - the old cut-n-paste demon again! I've amended the design now.
Oh, and the close-cropped warp-nacelles observation. I kind of mean the original placement in the wings. You are right, embeded nacelles are about as close cropped as you can get.
I don't think I would agree with having different types of torpedoe launchers in the wing pods. Wouldn't need to be fed from different magazines? It would make more sense to me, if that is the case, to have each wing pod share it's magazine with both launchers in the pod...
The other is, well FASAish. If I remember, in FASA lore, the Andorians used close cropped warp nacelles... but you can take that for the source it comes from, you know what I mean?
Hey, if you don't mind, I may design a ship similar and call it the "direct predecessor".
I am envisioning a romular white-wind sytle body and command section with Andor-class cruiser tail booms extending back like a WW2 P38 Lightning, with Warp Nacelles between them, like on the Andor itself.
I can first do a schematic with Illustrator then eventually a 3D Studio scene (in about two months).
That's what I had in mind as well, hence my comment re the LUG Andorian style vs the FASA Andorian style.
All the vessels shown in the LUG Andorian rulebook show the nacelles in the standard wingtip/end-of-pylon position. Of course the FASA-style could be explained as that of a particular Andorian shipyard/design bureau & although not all Andorian vessels use the inward facing warp pylons it is a uniquely Andorian concept.
Come to think of it I used the FASA style for the appearance of one of my designs: the Draken-class Heavy Frigate looks like a Steamrunner except the warp nacelles on the 'Runner are actually a pair of engineering hulls with the Draken's nacelles mounted on VG pylons projecting from the inside flanks of the e-hulls.
