    Question Spacedock Combat

To those who have used Spacedock combat, how did you find it? The basic rules for Starship combat are relatively quick to keep momentum going and are simple enough. How much more time is required to execute the average combative round betweent two ships with Spacedock combative rules versus the basic system?

I like the detail of Spacedock and I think it would give an additional layer of excitement to battle, but I am leary about implementing it because it would make starship combat take up too much of a chunk of a gaming session and be slow.

If I remember correctly, that book will also have new starship combat rules as well.
It does indeed. For each of the main combatants except Starfleet, it has a new maneuver or three (Starfleet already has plenty ). It also has new fleet combat rules for establishing defensive cordons, breaking holes in said cordons, and so forth and so on.

Haven't actually played an SD combat, but it looks to me like most of the additional "complexity" of the rules does derive from greater detail over the basic system rather than different, more complex principles. The page count is hefty, but most of it is options for duplicating "stunts" seen on the air that just won't pop up most of the time.

Spacedock and its expanded starship combat brings a whole new dimension to the subject. It expands upon the original Star Trek rpg starship combat rules to such a degree that one could play a table top game (or board game) of Star Trek consisting of nothing more than starship combat! Trust me, I have had hours of fun designing ships only to have hours more using those ships in large scale combat against those my friends have designed.

The new rules that I have found most usefull in my regular Trek games are the maneuvers (both attach and defensive) and the fleet combat rules. The fleet combat rules allow you to play out large scale starship combat events in a cinematic, fast paced way. While the manevers give standard starship combat more dimension with out sacrificing too much extra time.

If you ask me, the true genius of Steve Long's Spacedock lies in the starship combat rules. This is why I can't wait for the Dominion source book. If I remember correctly, that book will also have new starship combat rules as well.

We found it pretty quick and easy. We haven't used the basic system, though, so I can't really compare them.
