DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The above shows the typical performance capabilities of what is termed a Marauder-class Pirate Vessel, although many variations exist depending upon how they have been modified and what was available at the time of construction. Built with a combination of Federation, Romulan, Klingon and even a small amount of Cardassian technology, the vessels of this class are a hodge-podge of materials making it almost impossible for officials to trace the shipyard a vessel was built in if they somehow manage to capture it. The hull is basically a simple flattened cylinder with a sharp, jutting bow that is reminisent of an ancient Earth Bowie knife when seen from the side and 5 fins projecting from the flanks and upper surfaces of the stern. The centre fin is mounted like the tail on an aircraft and has a pod at it's tip holding two of the four main impulse engine thruster; the other 2 thrusters and the booster thrusters are mounted in pods at the ends of the lower fins which extend out from the centreline at a slight downward angle. The remaining 2 fins hold the warp nacelles and are squeezed in equidistantly between the 3 impulse engine pylons at approximately a 40 degree angle to the centreline. The navigational deflector is mounted in the dorsal scoop just above the tip of the bow with the forward phaser array along it's lower edge and beneath that in an irregular cluster are the main disruptor cannon, plasma torpedo launcher and forward torpedo launcher. The dorsal and ventral disruptors are carried in simple turrets mounted halfway along the main hull, with the former having a slightly resticted firing arc to the rear due to the array of fins, engine pods and warp nacelles. The aft torpedo launcher provides the only rearward weaponry and is unusual in that it has a greater rate of fire that the forward system, this is to help discourage pursuit in the event of a fast getaway from hostile vessels.
Overall the class is lightly armed compared to a true combat vessel and has a small torpedo magazine, but this fits with the pirate's standard targets of lightly armed civilian craft plus the use of a cloaking device and/or hull holoemitter to enable unsuspecting prey to be disabled in the first initial salvo. The most common cloaking device found on Marauder's comes off old B'rel-class Light Warships, although occasionaly older Romulan systems can be found. The design commonly has a large, but sparse and cramped, passenger capacity, used to carry troops, spare crews for captured vessels and/or hostages taken for ransom or slavery. Due to the latter, the escape pods are generally only available in the crew areas, a rather unpleasant feature considering the possible implications for the prisoners. The transporter systems are designed to enable both small surgical strikes through the use of the 4 4-man pads and larger boarding actions using the "emergency" 20-man pads. The onboard cargo capacity is rather small for a vessel intended to steal freight from other vessels although this is compensated by the four extra medium-heavy tractor beams mounted in the rear which are used to tow captured cargo. A pair of workpods are often carried to help collect any drifting loot and to assemble it into neatly packaged loads for towing. Many pirate captains carry a small complement of fighters to help protect the mothership and any valuable loads or prisoners. These fighters are often obsolete designs and frequently are deserted to fight a rearguard action whilst the main vessel escapes, not surprisingly this often leads to the fighters giving up rather than fighting, but many crews get (unwillingly) injected with "beserker" drugs just prior to launch to discourage this.
