    Description and Notes
[The below assumes that there was no TOS-era Brenton, or perhaps that this is a fundamental Refit a la Constitution/Enterprise; the description below is predicated on the nonexistence of a TOS version and the Mark IV refers to the design as of its fourth major refit in 2360-2365]

An Exploratory Cruiser, the Brenton was designed to survey star systems (with and without planets, habited and inhabited), collect data and perform a wide variety of Scientific mission functions as the Ambassadors were being pushed into more diplomatic and ‘Ship-of-the-Line’ duties. It packed a decent punch for its day, and with subsequent advances in Warp Propulsion technology has been raised back into the ‘normal’ range for vessel speed. While never a particularly large number of the Brentons were commissioned, most survived through the mark VI refit, only loosing a few isolated ships and those mostly to absolutely unknown causes.

    Appearance

The Brenton has a wide flat look, part of an attempt to make Federation vessels with somewhat different silhouettes. There is no ‘saucer’ and “Engineering” Hull per se. Think of it as a rectangle with sharply rounded edges at the front and a ‘flat’ back, this is the “Main Hull”. On top of this are two half-oval sections and a central tower which is referred to as the ‘Top hull’ (think of a slightly extended oval cut in half, laid crosswise on the Main Hull, separated slightly from one another with a rounded rectangle on the top of both flat ends). The nacelles extend from short broad pylons parallel to - and lower than - the Main Hull with a forward sweep.

    Design Notes

The Brenton-Class Mark IV is a ship for the series I am now contemplating (TNG), it has an ‘older’ feel to it that makes me a bit more comfortable for less-experienced PCs. It is just the sort of vessel that is good for rear-patrol and support action during the Dominion War, perhaps well inside of Federation space.

    Thanks Kalamaro, always appreciated.

As for a visual, the best thing to do would be to glance at the original TOS design on which I based this little lovely. It was originally found in FASA's Ship Recognition Manual, both 1st and 2nd edition. The First edition frankly had better pictures (at least of this vessel), and as ships go it's best 'look' is certainly a 'top' and (mst especially) '3/4s' view, not the side (which frankly is moderately awful). The TNG version which the stats are for here is something that I am planning to update now, trying to get a more "Next Gen" look for it (and help that profile out some - whew), but I have had problems fitting this sort of endeavor into my schedule lately.

The Starship Schematic Database has a picture of the Brenton, as do a few other sites, it was originally referred to as the "Brenton-Class" cruiser in case you want to search one of them for it.

Well Kalamaro, I take it you are the Narrarator.. all I can say is that you decide what ships to have based on game balance.. Never theless even if you decide to give into the players soimetimes needed for good feelings, the ship is still useful for a NPC vessel..
