I'm modifying the B'rel to create a house variant. I'm over the SU limit by 25 su's, i think i can do it as long as i don't exceed the max su's for the size and the ship doesn't get any bigger. Is this how everyone reads it?

Keep it, but dont count the "overflowing" SUs towards damage. Possibly give the ship some problems - like increased hull stress or something for filling the hull over the safe limit. There must be some price to pay.

Ice Giant, in my game I probably wouldn't let you get away with that. The max SUs listed for the B'rel in its Template represent the upper limit of what you can do with adding or changing stuff around.
However, in many cases the max SUs listed for ships are far below the max SUs for the ship's Size category (I did this to create some variability, and to keep people from going whole hog tricking out canon ships just because they could). Technically, there's no reason you can't use all the SUs for a given category, instead of the SUs listed in the Template, if you want to do that.

Well, i totally understand that.Originally posted by Steve Long:

Steve LongI figured i could probably get away with it seeing as i'm the one running the game. But i do understand trying to limit munchkinism
I can bring it under the 1075 su's just didn't want too. Oh well. Back to math class

One of my players like to beef up our ship, and already tough enough Galaxy-class. As his character is a well-connected engineer, who enjoys modifying ship designs (and due to the fact that we rotate gamemastering), he installed lots of new systems to the ship.
When GM'ing returned to my hands, I promptly corrected the situation by giving the ship lots of incompatibility and impedance problems... he's currently working on a solution to this. It's not impossible, but he'll have to do a lot o math to reduce some SU's !

No matter where you go, there you are.
I'm interested in some input on this topic as it regards adding ablative armor to Federation vessels.
I understood what was put in Space Dock regarding the explanation as why the armor counted towards the SUs for basic design; but if you were adding exterior armor to an already designed vessel...do you still feel compelled to respect the SU limit in the process of this refit?
What I decided to do was simply add the SU the Armor accounted for to the maximum limit of the vessel so that any internal modifications would still be faced with the contraints the hull layout provided.
That said, that is how it is going to work in my own game, but I am interested in other opinions on this for future consideration.
