    Cool Akira vs D'Deridex Simulation

Location: G2 star system just beyond the known boundaries of the Romulan Star Empire, coreward of the Empire.

A Romulan warbird has made an important discovery on the 3rd world of this system and is investigating further.

A Federation Talon class scoutship, USS Osprey, goes into standard orbit around the star's 3rd planet, an M class world. As it moves around the planet, a Romulan D'Deridex class warbird is detected in synchronous orbit where it had previously been out of sight from the Osprey or her mother ship.

From its position, the warbird has yet to detect any other Federation ships.

The Akira class heavy cruiser USS Vanguard moves past the orbit of the system's 4th world, a J class planet. An asteroid belt lies between the Vanguard and the 3rd world where the USS Osprey has been sent to scout ahead. The Vanguard is a long way from home, far from Federation boundaries, with the bulk of the Romulan Star Empire laying between her and home. The Vanguard is unaware of any other ships in this star system.

    Turn 1 Initial Report:

This is going to be a bit wierd. Turn 1 is more than just a single 5
second battle turn. It also involves actions that will take much more
than 5 seconds. Bear with us folks, as this scenario develops.
Actions not seen by the opposing participants will be confirmed by
    email.

    USS Osprey has initiative.

    ACTION 1:

USS Osprey raises shields upon spotting a Romulan warbird.

Star Runner immediately cloaks upon spotting a Federation Scoutship.

(All of this action takes place in sensor shadow to the other
    Federation participants.)

    ACTION 2:

Osprey broadcasts in clear on standard subspace frequency. Image of a
fierce male Klingon in Starfleet uniform appears on the screen.
"Romulan ship, Commander Bar'Tak commanding- We are on a peaceful
survey mission of this system and are willing to exchange any data
    acquired!"

Romulans perform their second action (not visible to USS Osprey).

    ACTION 3:

Osprey continues orbit, approaching Romulan position, performs sensor
    scans to detect Romulan vessel.

Cmdr. Bar'Tak sends: "Commander Bar'Tak to Romulan ship. Just like a
P'Tagh cowardly Romulan to cloak when he's outgunned and outmatched!"

Romulans perform their third action (not visible to USS Osprey).

USS Vanguard performs actions not visible to Star Runner.

    ACTION 4:

    USS Osprey continues in orbit.

Star Runner reveals its general position by broadcasting communication
jamming signal- but not enough for weapons lock.

Romulans perform their fourth action (not visible to USS Osprey).

USS Vanguard performs actions not visible to Star Runner.

    ACTION 5:

USS Osprey fails to detect cloaked Romulans- other than general
position of warbird due to jamming emission.

Romulans perform actions not visible to USS Osprey.

USS Vanguard performs actions not visible to Star Runner.

    Red face

These are the results of Turn 2 visible to all participants:

USS Osprey comes screaming around the night side of Planet 3 at .3c within the upper atmosphere, trailing a comet tail of plasma as its shields deflect the air.

Osprey is closely followed by a Theta class courier (Swift Messenger)which attempts, unsuccessfully to lock a tractor beam on Osprey. A second Theta class (Nightmare) moves swiftly into view, outside of the atmosphere, but within easy range of the Osprey. It also unsuccessfully tries to lock a tractor beam on the Starfleet ship.

USS Osprey fires both aft phaser arrays in a multifire action against the pursuing Swift Messenger. All four shots strike the unshielded Romulan courier rapidly disabling her life support and impulse engines. The cockpit is also hit, killing all aboard. The Swift Messenger tumbles out of control and is destroyed by atmospheric resistance.

A Romulan D'Deridex warbird (Star Runner) comes around the rim of Planet 3 and fires its forward Disruptor array at the USS Osprey, but misses completely.

Nightmare manages to lock on to Osprey's impulse engines and multifires its forward Disruptor array. Two shots hit and overcome the starboard shield's threshold, destroying the impulse engine. USS Osprey rapidly begins to decelerate.

    End of Combat Turn 2.

Star Runner and Nightmare detect presence of USS Vanguard on the other side of the asteroid belt. Sensors locate at least one small craft approaching outer boundary of asteroid belt. No other vessels detected.

USS Vanguard is able to observe the action over the night side of Planet 3 because it was looking for something to happen and because of her lateral sensor array.

Thank you gentlemen. Orders may be submitted for Combat Turn 3.

Well, you see, in order for two sides to play in this sim, there has to be hidden movement. However, I think its safe to admit that the Nightmare and Swift Messenger were cloaked up to the point they tried to snatch the USS Osprey.

Cmdr Bar'Tak on the Osprey, decided that the Romulan's movements around him, cloaked, were hostile, so he took evasive action- diving into the upper atmosphere. Seems to have worked- sort of...

    Stay tuned!

My prayers go out to the fallen romulan crew, but if it was a fight they wanted . . . I fight they're having. Make no mistake, we offered a peaceful beginning, therefore, and as always I shall make this statement "Don't start a fight, but be sure to finish one."

And way to go USS Osprey!!

These are the results of battle turn 3:

    Initiative:

    1. Nightmare
    2. Star Runner
    3. USS Osprey

Actions performed by USS Vanguard and others are out of initiative sequence for purposes of the ongoing battle.

    ACTION 1:

Nightmare's commander utters a curse as he watches Swift Messenger tumble away to destruction. Immediately Nightmare's shields come up.

Commander Seylar follows suit- immediately raising Star Runner's shields. The prey has teeth!

With nothing but wreckage where her impulse pack was, USS Osprey hurtles away from the planet on a tangent, greatly slowed by loss of thrust and by atmospheric friction.
Nightmare and Star Runner easily maintain position on the scoutship which now no longer has any atmospheric protection.
LtCmdr Bar'Tak targets his forward phaser arrays on Nightmare and performs multifire.

Range is close (5), Bar'Tak's skill is 5. Multiaction modifier is -2. Roll is 4+5-2=7. 7-5=2 so 3 shots hit. Total damage vs Nightmare's Port shields is 150. Nightmare's shield threshold is 150 so Nightmare's Port shield is reduced to 200.

    ACTION 2:

Nightmare attempts targetting lock on USS Osprey's forward phaser arrays. Called shot penalty eliminated by sensor lock.

Star Runner attempts targetting lock on USS Osprey's forward phaser arrays. Called shot penalty eliminated, Size penalty eliminated, by sensor lock.

USS Osprey's shields increase to 550 on Aft shields and 266 on Starboard shields, cutting power elsewhere to allow warp drive to power up.

    ACTION 3:

Nightmare attempts to grab USS Osprey with tractor beam. With no atmospheric or plasma sheath interference, the tractor beam lances out and grabs Osprey.

Star Runner also attempts to grab USS Osprey with tractors. Again a tractor beam latches on.

With the mass of a D'Deridex class and a Theta class holding her in place, USS Osprey jerks to a halt.

Unfortunately, LtCmdr Bar'tak had already begun to initiate warp drive. He engages just as the tractors grab his scoutship.

USS Osprey explodes as its warp engines attempt to fling the scoutship out of reach of the Romulans!
    All hands are lost.

Today is a good day to die!

Star Runner's sensor technicians have determined that a Starfleet Akira class Heavy Cruiser is moving at high impulse speed, directly towards them, but still outside the asteroid belt.

Star Runner's sensor technicians are picking up intermittent readings indicating at least 3 small spacecraft entering the asteroid belt. More definitive readings are not possible due to interference from the asteroids.

USS Vanguard's sensors have confirmed the loss of the USS Osprey and the presence of a D'Deridex class Warbird accompanied by a Theta class Courier.

Actions not visible to Romulans occur onboard Federation ships.

    End battle turn 3.

Situation Maps to be downloaded shortly. Deadline for Turn 4 orders is midnight, March 14 (US Central Time).

    Thank you gentlemen.

    Cool

At this time, the simulation contracts down to a small (relatively) section of the asteroid belt where the two forces are approaching each other. I have asked all commanders to be very careful in plotting their movements, using degree headings and impulse movements to keep track of their positions.

The commanders have been given til March 16th midnight (US Central time) to turn in their final orders.

    So far so good...

    Cool

    Turn 4 Initiative:
    1. Romulans
    2. USS Vanguard
    3. First group of small Starfleet ships
    4. Second group of small Starfleet ships

Both sides are entering opposite sides of the asteroid map. Until both sides are aware of each other's precise location, further data can't be related in clear.

Both sides negotiate small clusters of asteroids. Both sides are detecting each other, but scans are intermittently interrupted by local clutter.

Both sides are approximately 3,000,000 km apart and moving at relatively slow impulse speed at this time. Both sides have shields up and the Romulans are not currently cloaked. Both sides know each other's approximate location, but not well enough for weapons launch or precision scanning.

I'm sorry that more precise material can't be shown at this time. Suffice it to say that both sides have been given more detailed data about their orders and are proceeding with the battle.

The deadline for Turn 5 orders is Wednesday, March 21, midnight (US Central Time).

    Thank you for your patience.

This is what makes this battle very different from the Wolf 359 scenario. In that battle, all of the players were on one side and results could be displayed fully. Steve moderated and ran the Borg. The Cube's position and activities were obvious.

Here, we have two opposing sides who are feeling their way towards each other through an asteroid field and making confidential plans which the opposing side may not know. Perhaps I should have ran the Romulans and not had opposing sides. Too late for that now...

yah . . . that would of been interesting. It would of been a challange . . . especially with you, the resident CV Akira expert. But I think all of us still could have taken you . . . hehe

    TURN 5 Results

I apologize for the delay. Hopefully everyone is on track now.

During this turn, the Romulans and Starfleet ships have managed to locate each other down to 150,000km (please see the turn 5 map in files at starship battles).

The Starfleet ships are moving deeper into the asteroid belt at speeds ranging from .4 to .6c, usually avoiding denser asteroid clusters, but not encountering any piloting problems while doing so.

The Romulan ships are currently stationary in a light asteroid cluster.

Everyone's shields are up. The Romulan is not cloaked.

The Federation ship hails the Romulans: "This is the USS Vanguard, Captain Ronaldo Marques commanding, calling the unidentified Romulan vessel. Attacking our scoutship was an unnecessary, hostile act. Our two peoples are currently at a state of peace. According to our data, we are not within the boundaries of the Romulan Star Empire. I suggest that we meet and amicably discuss this unfortunate situation. Please respond."

This concludes Turn 5. Orders for Turn 6 are due Thursday night, March 29th. If there is further communication between the participants that will be handled before final orders are due.

    Exclamation

"Captain Marques! We're receiving a hail from the Romulans!"

"Let's hear what they have to say, Ensign."

No picture appears on the screen, but the measured, even tones of a mature woman's voice sound over the bridge.

"This is Commander Seylar, RSN Star Runner. According to recently gathered information you are within Romulan territory. I will send all pertinent information, hold."

The ensign says, "Sir, we are receiving a series of sensor logs..." Science Officer Lor, a tall, slightly sour-looking Andorian at Science 1, says, "interpreting sensor logs, Captain. Hmmm, this is interesting!"

"Sir, this shows a population on Planet 3 of at least 10 million- all of Vulcanoid configuration. Probably Romulans, sir. And, this is interesting, there is no indication of modern technology! They would appear to be the equivalent of an early industrial civilization. They are divided up into several separate city-states and the Romulans have made contact with the largest of these. They haven't sent much more than that, sir. They're very stingy with their sensor information."

-There you have a Romulan response. What do you make of it?
