This representation of the Dauntless II shows it laid out in an Anti-Ship roll, a roll it was often to find itself in during the Dominion war. Produced and designed by the famed Lockheed-Shivas corporation the Dauntless II marked a returned to small fighter like craft for Starfleet the design firm went out of its way to make sure it was just not a “glorified shuttle” right down to the obvious late 20th frame and body. (In fact many claim the design aesthetic is taken directly form the F-14 aircraft which flew with the old American Navy of Earth from 1974 - 2022.) If not for the two protruding warp nacelles beneath the fuselage one could rightly assume this to be a jet aircraft.

The desire for a substantial fighter craft led to some radical departures for this vehicle namely the lack of long-range sensors. It was decided early that that since the Dauntless was to operate as a large package flying with other craft some of which would be pure EW fighters that the need for such was not as strong. Today this craft with several others forms the backbone of Starfleet’s Spacevation. Usualy operating in Squadrons of 10 to 12 each.

Looks good but since the vessel looks like a f-14 you actualy could have the nacelles encased. By doing so your shields would be increased to 510 and threshold would be at 130 or possibly 140.

Question

Eric, you sure this is a Size 1 craft? Length and width sound definitly Size 2 to me.

Apart from that, how about adding Impulse Thrusters to your design?
This would cost you the last 4 unused SUs, but gives a +0.1c to impulse speed and a bonus for maneuvers at high impulse speeds. I think that could be a nice asset when going up against a heavily armed, but slow enemy ship.

You know I just assumed that it was Size 1 and concentrated on the 325 limit when I built it. Now I will have to go back and redo it. (boy thats a Rookies error) Of course this will actually be for the better as I can increse the power base a little to what I had originally intended for it! (as while as adding those thrusters) Look for the Dauntless IIb later today. (boy I'm glad I saved the version with all the formating on it.)

Thumbs up

Nice job! I've recently introduced a new starship class in my campaign that is technically an aircraft carrier for squadrons of fighters. Since we play loose with starship combat, I didn't have any idea what the fighters may look like, but this fleshed it out in my head. Maybe I'll actually put together the carrier on paper and post it one day.

Anyway, once again nice job!

That's a hot little fighter. It looks like it would work well with my Starsnipe in hunter/killer or search-and-destroy teams.

If not for the two protruding warp nacelles beneath the fuselage one could rightly assume this to be a jet aircraft.

The desire for a substantial fighter craft led to some radical departures for this vehicle namely the lack of long-range sensors. Today this craft with several others forms the backbone of Starfleet’s Spacevation. Usually operating in Squadrons of 10 to 12 each.

Armament Notes – The Dauntless operates in two basic roles either Anti-shipping or Fleet defense. While the Anti-shipping role was to be the predominate mission of the Dauntless it did serve fairly well as a fleet defense fighter. When configured for the Fleet defense roles its Tactical system were as outlined below:

TACTICAL SYSTEMS 50 SU

Type VI Port Phaser 23 SU
Damage: 120 [12 power]
Number of emitters: 120 (3 shots per round)
Auto Phase interlock: Class Gamma Accuracy 3/4/6/9
Range: 10/30,000/100,000/300,000
Location: Forward Port Wing ventral
Firing Arc: Forward (360)
Firing Modes: Standard and Continuos

Forward Port Micro-torpedo Launcher 2 SU
Standard Load: 100 (50 damage)
Spread: 5
Range: 1/100/500/2,000
Targeting System: Accuracy 4/5/7/10
Power: {1]
Location: Forward Port Wing ventral
Firing arc: Forward 180

Forward Starboard Micro-torpedo Launcher 2 SU
Standard Load: 100 (50 damage)
Spread: 5
Range: 1/100/500/2,000
Targeting System: Accuracy 4/5/7/10
Power: {1]
Location: Forward Starboard Wing ventral
Firing arc: Forward 180

Type V1 Starboard Phaser 23 SU
Damage: 120 [12 power]
Number of emitters: 120 (3 shot per round)
Auto Phase interlock: Class Gamma Accuracy 3/4/6/9
Range: 10/30,000/100,000/300,000
Location: Forward Starboard Wing Ventral
Firing Arc: Forward (360)
Firing Modes: Standard and Continuos

Type X Forward Pulse Phaser Cannon 6 SU
Damage: 250 [25 power]
Number of emitters: 5 (1 shot per round)
Auto Phase interlock: Class Gamma Accuracy 3/4/6/9
Range: 10/30,000/100,000/300,000
Location: Ventral Nose
Firing Arc: Forward (360)
Firing Modes: Standard

While it was possible for the Dauntless II to function in both missions at once it was not done because of the amount of power that would have been required to do so, not to mention the complexity added to the individual pilot and operation officers job. The over burden craft in such cases tended to over tax the basic flight control systems of the Dauntless and when flight system were lost it tended to be catastrophic. (A – 2 modifier to all flight control skill test and the elimination of any bonuses)

Dauntless IIB – Introduced shortly after the A version, the B possessed increased power with a new Class 4/G warp engine and better shielding with new class 4 shield generators. One very welcomed aspect of the new version was the introduction of thrusters which gave the craft an enhanced maneuvering ability in the close quarters fighting which characterized most space combat in the Dominion War. The 4,567 B models were produced mainly at the Lookheed-Shivas facilities on Andor, Mars and Trill with front-line deliveries starting in late 2171.

Type X pulse phasers?! That's gonna leave a mark...

Just wondering why you didn't put in a better TA/T/TS system. You've got the SUs to spare, and better targetting systems would make life a whole lot easier for the crew. The two of them are going to be getting lots of multi-action penalties, and a better TA/T/TS would alleviate some of that problem.

Truth is I intentionally restrained myself from going too state of the art. All fighters have their individual quarks and perks and so on. I plan to make up a D model also (the C being a full production model and the D older B's upgraded).

Sweet little ship now. Just one small remark: Your Pulse Phaser Cannon would cost 13 SU if I'm not mistaken - minimum number of emitters in an array is 40 (Spacedock, page 66, left column).

I like that way of thinking. Not every ship has got to have the best possible systems you could cram into it. Besides, the Class Gamma Phaser Interlock makes it easy enough to hit an enemy, even with multiple-action penalties.

-bump- Wow . . . my merlin never did this!

But then again when do you find a fighter with shield over 1,000 :-D

Nice fighter

Always like a multi-role fighter. Did one up for my game prior to using two specialized craft. My problem was that the dice hated my design, (lotsa ones rolled in combat) Darn things were jinxed or something. Went to two different fighter designs for fleet defense and anti-ship. But this? This is cherry.

Just a bump to see if she can stand the test of time, over three years since I "built" this little baby and I am still proud of her

Looking through the class, excellent design. Just a few points.

All class designs have to have at least Jeffries Tubes so +2SUs
Impulse Thrusters are 2 * Size so +2SUs
Lateral Sensors should be 7, not 12 so -5SUs
Navigational Sensors should be 6, not 12 so -6SUs
And what's with the 1(2) for Flight Control Systems? Dont get the reason for that.

Plus, your numbers come to 477, not 455. But that's not right anyway now.

Sorry to nit-pick. Just trying to sort out the ship classes in here for this other SRM we're working on.
