Red face Winged Defender?

I asked this over in "Star Trek Chat," but maybe this is a more appropriate place.

Does anyone have stats - either ICON or Spacedock - for the FASA Romulan Winged Defender? It was a great ship. I'd like to throw it at my PCs someday...

I'd love to see stats for it too, have to try and make time see if I can work them out.

It was my favorite Romulan ship from FasaTrek

The V-30 "Winged Defender" was Romulan the match for the Enterprise-class, and by far the best design in the book, someplace around here I have the FASA's Romulan: Ship Reconition Manual, alas, I'm not very well versed in Spacedock.

Personally I think the design would have continued in to the TNG era, similar to the Excelcer/Miranda classes of Starfleet or the Klingon's K'T'Inga-class.

I'll have a Spacedock version ready in 2-3 days, providing my work doesn't get in the way. Ir's about time I designed something again.

I hope this matches everybody's expectations, I must confess that I've rushed this one somewhat to meet my self-imposed deadline. I don't think there's any serious errors, but if there are then scream & shout.

DESCRIPTION AND NOTES
The Vas'Deletham, or Winged Defender, class of warship was for a time the most feared vessel in the Romulan fleet. The design was to the Romulans what the Sovereign-class currently represents to the Federation, a combination of their most advanced technologies to produce not only a powerful combat vessel, but also a showpiece of Romulan progress.
More bird-like than even the Klingon B'Rel, the Vas'Deletham is modelled after a short bodied bird of prey native to Remus, with wide spread wings and short, foward swept 'legs' jutting from the belly. The legs each end in a large weapons pod, mounting a massive forward disruptor cannon, with warp nacelles on the wingtips and cosmetic feathering along the wing surfaces. The first production batch were even atmospheric capable, but two serious flight accidents lead to this feature being removed.
By modern standards the Winged Defender is a slow vessel, achieving a maximum speed of Warp 9 on the old scale, which translates to just over Warp 7 by the current reckoning. Under impulse power, even an original vessel is more than adequate with a pair of powerful Class 6 engines providing both thrust and energy. The weaponry is still acceptable, particularly the main forward disruptors, only the rate of fire of the torpedo launchers when using standard torpedoes fails to meet current capabilities.
If the design has a weakness, common to many Romulan vessels of it's era, it is that it's not capable of powering both it's cloaking device and shields simultaneously without sacrificing vital systems, propulsion or weaponry. This failing gives opponent vessels a small window of opportunity to either cripple or destroy a Winged Defender in the seconds between it uncloaking and raising shields. This fault has lead to numerous vessels being lost over the decades, unfortunately for the many nations commonly opposed by the Romulans this very flaw was what prompted the design of the D'Deridex-class, a far more lethal vessel.

DEVELOPER'S NOTES
I've tweaked the armament from the FASA version (8 disruptors - 4 fwd, 1 port, 1 stbd, 1 port/aft, 1 stbd/aft; 3 light photon lnchrs) to match the Spacedock game mechanics whilst keeping reasonably close to the orginal intent. Much of the design is based upon guesswork & gut feel combined with comparison with other designs, both the modern Romulan D'Deridex Warbird and my own versions of the contemporary Excelsior, Constitution-II (ie. ST:I Enterprise), etc.
I've kept certain components under strength to simulate the older technology. To produce a modern upgrade of the design simply improve such features as the targeting systems, sensors strength, cloaking capability, etc. There's plenty of SUs available to adjust the design as required for modern campaigns.

Exellent job Swampy, read over the design and with what I know about SD it looks properly converted in all areas.

Again, Thank You for the time and effort you've put forward on this design, I love it.

Question

Is this meant to be the FASA Winged Defender?

If so then why are the dimensions so large?
"Size: 8
Length: 513 metres
Beam: 618 metres
Height: 194 metres"

The FASA ship would be Size 6 or low SU Size 7. It's dimensions are about half those listed here. Any reason for making it so much larger?

Post

A couple of reasons:
First, the stats in the FASA SRMs are way too low for SD. Look at all the designs & you see length, mass, etc are all far lower than would be expected. Even ships described as "massive" by FASA would be mid-sized at best in SD.
The second reason is that the Winged Defender is described as the one of the most powerful vessels in the Romulan Star Navy, beaten only by the Nova-class Battleship. To me designing the ship as a Size 8 fitted the intent of the design. Another point: the D'Deridex Warbird shows that the RSN tends to prefer oversized vessels, so a size 8 cruiser fits IMHO.

That may be true, but 'Massive' in FASA is probably in comparrison to a Constitution class, as the most familiar vessel to the players. So thats massive compared to a 200m (?) long vessel, not a TNG scale of over 500m...

I agree that it seems a little big for a Movie-era vessel. While I wouldn't blink twice during the TNG era.

Out of interest what were the original size specifications?

But the SD is based on late 24th century ships and the FASA SRMs on late 23rd century ships. You're not comparing like with like.

Look at all the designs & you see length, mass, etc are all far lower than would be expected.
I agree on the mass issue. All FASA (and indeed all old style trekinical fandom) masses should be multiplied by about 4.5 to bring them in line with canon. But the FASA lengths, widths and heights are spot on (give or take the odd rounding error). Look at the Constitution, Reliant (Miranda), Excelsior and D-7. Of the canon ships only the Grissom/Sagan (Oberth) is wrong and that's too big not too small.

Even ships described as "massive" by FASA would be mid-sized at best in SD.
Massive ships in the 2280s will be midsized by the 2370s. Look at the Excelsior.

The second reason is that the Winged Defender is described as the one of the most powerful vessels in the Romulan Star Navy, beaten only by the Nova-class Battleship.
The most powerful vessel in the 2280s. Not the 2370s. Spotting a trend yet?

To me designing the ship as a Size 8 fitted the intent of the design.
If you were designing it as a ship launched in the mid-late 24th century, yes. But as a ship launched in the late 23rd century, no.

Another point: the D'Deridex Warbird shows that the RSN tends to prefer oversized vessels, so a size 8 cruiser fits IMHO.
The only thing that can be gained by looking at the Winged Defender and the D'Deridex is that Romulan ships are often a lot smaller than their dimensions suggest, they have lots of empty space between and around rather thin wing surfaces. A good reason to go for SU figures towards the lower end of the range available for their size.

The width and height of the Winged Defender make it Size 7. The length size 5 and the mass (once corrected) size 6. So I'd go for Size 6 or a low SU size 7.
