Thread: Non ST-Universe ships?

    Talking Non ST-Universe ships?

    Hi,

Has anyone come up with the ships from Galaxy Quest (Protector) and the Andromeda TV series? I'm thinking about running an adventure in an alternative universe but don't have time to come up with the Spacedock Stats.

    Thanks,
    PC

BrianK and I have been talking about making the Narn cruisers and Protector, but I wouldn't assume that would be anytime soon.

I'd love to see somebody take a shot at non-Trek ships with the Spacedock rules and post their templates, but frankly I doubt it's worth the effort. The construction rules are so Trek-specific that you'd have to come up with lots of rules for new systems -- so many that I suspect it would slow or derail the effort to write up the ships themselves.

Heck, just to create TOS-era ships, I had to write 16,000 words' worth of new ship construction rules (that's about 25% the length of a typical LUG supplement such as All Our Yesterdays.) The rules for ships from Andromeda, B5, or the like would probably require even more new rules.

Still, I'd love to see someone try. Every time I watch Andromeda, I think about how to build the ships.

I get your point, Steve. Would making the ships in the basic core rulebook format be any easier, or would we have to come up with a ton of new rules for this simplier format?

    Another thought:
What are the basic stats, weapons, capabilities, and systems for these ships? Has anyone done any research or written any books on these ships?

    Thanks,

You might try to use the SciFi Conversion Page for the B5, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactia stuff. The stats are all in Pallaidum rules though.

For the Amdromada info the best information I could find is at the All Systems University

oh yeah there is a sight linked from the trek-net-rpg page that has a SW cross over section (pre Space Dock). I forget the sight's name but here's the link

Well best of luck to whoever trys to design thies ships,

PLease dont forget Moya and Talon from Farscape...

Although rules for both organic based and 'living' Starships could equally be transposed into Trek, for Gomtuu, Changeling ship forms and Species 8472 ships...

Oh, you'd definitely find the basic format easier. Not only does it contain much less information, but you can just sort of "wing it," rather than having to follow precise rules for everything. Still, you would have to make up some new rules. To write up ships from Andromeda, for example, you'd have to create rules for the show's slipstream drive and point defense lasers, regardless of whether you used LUG's basic or advanced ship rules.

I'm not aware of any books at all on Andromeda; it's too new. For B5, there are the books on the short-lived RPG from Chameleon Eclectic, and the books for the minis game from Agents of Gaming; either of them probably has plenty of info you could make use of.

Lets tackle this here in pieces, maybe this thread can become the Spacedock version of the Dr. Who thread up in Mechanics!

For construction Rules we need mainly stuff on:

Engineering: Hyperspace drives, Jump gates, etc... Some of the More primitiive stuff takes up a lot of room in a ship so the Sus have to be upped considerably.

Weapons: while basic Space dock has just about everything from lasers to Phaser. Missile eapons need to be expanded and of course Ion cannons and Turbo Lasers are a must addition.

Other: Size chart might have to expanded upward espicialy if youring itiching to build V motherships and Star Wars Death Stars (and you thought the Borg Cube was easy!)

Any ideas out there? There is a good set of rules for building ships in the SFB universe which has good explaniations of all types of systems and could be used as a guide. Its listed uaually under rules for making TNG era ships and I found them on the Unooficial Star Fleet Battles site.

Assuming you actually want to tackle this project, I'd definitely suggest doing it one property/setting at a time. Don't try to do 'em all at once; that way lies madness.

Someone did make up a set of stats on the capital ships of Star Wars. I seen (and printed for S-n-G) them off the net. I think they were done in LUG-Trek. I have no place to post them, but if someone is interested I could e-mail them to them to post.

I would definitly like to see Space Dock stats for Star Wars ships. That way we can put to rest the debate of what is better, the Enterprise or a Star Destroyer. I know this is blasphemy, but I'm rooting for the Star Destroyer.

Oh, that's not going to solve anything. If you want to, you can easily start arguing about whether various Spacedock or other numerical representations of starships are accurate. Anyone who wants to can simply claim that his favorite ship "lost" because it wasn't properly written up or played.

For example, objectively, I don't think a Star Destroyer would stand a chance against most Federation vessels, even some small ones. But reasonable minds may differ.

For both of you guys, the third site I mentioned above, is that site, the "Star Trek RPG Series" owned by John Stanford, and for the sake of simplicity:

    http://home.austin.rr.com/jdominion/index2.html

Then click on the button to the left labeled "AS/XO" or Animated Series/Cross Over, that will put you on the page with the SW ships (Their at the bottom), and a few other things. In order: Star Trek: The Animated Series, Aliens (The Movie), Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Dune, and finally Star Wars

Just my two cents, Dexter I'm going to agree with Steve in saying "that's not going to solve anything" peoples opinions vary alot about the abilities of a fictional objects, it's just like two little kids arguing about who's dad could beat-up the other. Yes, I did have a very similar argument with an old roommate, he is an avid Wars fan, myself Trek all the way baby!!

    Any Way,

    GRAVITY DRIVE
    Used By: V motherships
SU Cost: One half of all SU remaining after purchase of Hull and Personnel Systems
Power: N/a (the unit is self-contain and always produces power required)

Working on the same basic principle as the Warp Drive, these huge drives
function without the benefit of Matter/Anti-Matter collision and warp-coil nacelles.
While they can be powered from Fission to Ion engines typically they can only reach
slower warp speeds (typically Warp 5 equivelent). Generaly a Gravity Drive takes up as
much as one half of the total internal space within a ship and one half to three thirds of
    the ships power output.

Unlike Warp Drives the cost and making of a Gravity drive is one process in that
the engines and other auxilliery systems are self contain and not separate though there
power cost can be assumed to be the twice that produced as additional power . The
additional power produced by the drive for the ships systems are listed as a sum of 20 x
the ships size i.e. a size 16 ship’s drive produces 360 additional power.

Only ships of size 5 and higher are able to mount a Gravity Drive and for general
reference sake the drives have been divided into Type’s, though name and make are
changed depending upon which race operates the vessel. Speeds are expressed in warp
factors. The SU cost is one half of all SU’s remaining after construction of the ships hull
    and personnel systems.
