    Post Legacy Class Heavy Cruiser

This is my first attempt at an SD ship , so bear with me, this vessel is heavily based off the Sovereign class as a cheaper more easily mass produced version, in a similar way to the Nebula.

    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES

During the Design phase of the Soveriegn Class Explorers, Dr Jellen Astor Of the ASDB Hull Design team put forward the idea of variable geometry naccelles on the Soverign's, but it was rejected for a more conventional style. However, another team that was working on the as yet unnamed Legacy class brought Astor in for a brainstorming session. As the team were already using a smaller version of the basic Soveriegn spaceframe, but with atmospheric operations as a reqirement as well. During the disscusion moveable nacelles were brought up by accident. This idea solved on of their biggest headeache, as the new Soveriegn Nacelle design could not withstand the aerodynamic and gravitational forces of atmospheric flight. The variable geometry design allowed for the Soveriegn's speed to be retained whilst enhancing atmospheric handling as well.
Overall, the Legacy class is 15% smaller than its parent design, with an almost identical internal configuration. For her main armament type X phaser arrays were chosen due to there availability within Starfleet's inventory. With the success of the pulse phaser system abound the USS Defiant, and the limited availability of quantum torpedoes, the Soveriegn's forward torpedo module was replaced with the most advanced pulse phaser produced to date.
An unusual design change was inplemented late in the design phase, the pulse phaser module can be undocked at a starbase and replaced with another 12 spread torp launcher in 18 hours if needed, allowing for any unusual ammount of tactical flexability.
Another unusual feature of this class is the ability to carry internally and launch four Starfleet fighters in the aft engineering section.

USS Unicorn Rammed and destroyed Dominion carrier
USS Legacy Made first contact with the Son'a

    Designers Notes
For you guys (and gals) out there that own the ST:NG sketch book, the Legacy class is pictured on page 88

The Legacy Classes role is as replacement for the aging Wambundu class heavy cruiser and patrolling beyond the Typhon expanse searching for futher signs of the Borg.

The Wambundu Class dispite refits is near the end of its design life, this class is usually found the most dangerous borders of the Federation.

    Does that help?

    Question

Looks nice, but the real question is what role does it fill?

Like in the Modern Navy they just don't build new ships just cause, but because there is a need for it? Now is there? Is there another class out there already that fullfils the role foresceen for this class? And if so then is it ready to be phased out? Why?
