    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES

The brainchild of Dr Jenna Lambert of the ASDB, the Trafalgar class Fast Frigate was originally designed for long range reconnaissance, fleet support as well as an eventual replacement for Starfleet's antiquated Miranda Class. Designed from the outset to be as manoeuvrable as possible as well as having a greater sustainable warp velocity that any current or proposed starship design. Its mission is to dart into contested space and perform detailed scans of the area charting routes and other pertinent data.
Due to the increasing tensions upon first contact with the Dominion, work was stepped up across the board; just in case. The information returned about the Dominion by the USS Defiant concerning the Dominion weapons ability to ignore a vessels shields prompted a late design change to be implemented on the Trafalgar prototype; the addition of ablative hull armour. This armour addition caused some problems due to the structural changes, such as a smaller shuttlebay and the removal of a torpedo launcher.
The ability of many Dominion vessels to enter a planets atmosphere and Starfleet's capital ships inability to follow prompted Starfleet Command to issue all Trafalgar Class vessels to be with an unusual array of atmospheric and high-yield capacity ordinance. This step was taken because the standard Type II torpedoes breaks up when entering atmosphere.
A total of sixteen vessels had been produced by the time of Cardassia Prime’s fall, and unusually only one vessel the USS Swiftsure had been lost.
During the many engagements that Trafalgar class vessels participated in, planners were rather surprised and pleased to find that these vessels acted like a cross to the mythical vampires of Earth mythology, for their phenomenal ability to destroy massive numbers of Jem’hadar Attack Fighters. This Class soon gained the nickname of “Flyswatters” amongst the wings they were assigned too.
Only one potential flaw has been found to date, it involves the acceleration modules of the impulse engines. At combat speeds, performing extreme high stress manoeuvres, micro fractures have been found around the warp pylon roots on some ships. Whilst serious, modifications to the SIF usually mitigates the damage until a permanent shipyard fix can be procured. Many engineers believe that the extra weight of the ablative armour may have something to do with this.
The only vessel to be lost the USS Swiftsure, was due to inexperience by her wing commander. Captain Gerdus of the USS Purdey, assigned Swiftsure to anchor a position within the wing that greatly restricted her manoeuvring room and speed. With these restrictions; the wings stallion was hobbled like a donkey, and was pounded by being where a heavier vessel should have been.

    Notable Ships
    USS Trafalgar Prototype
USS Victory Participated in Operation Return
USS Nelson Heavily damaged by Breen weapons during attack on Earth (not to be confused with Constellation Class USS Nelson)
USS Swiftsure Lost during the first battle of Vulcanus
USS Indefatigable Fitted with Metaphasic shielding, used to deliver RRT and supplies to Betazed, current assignment Starfleet Intelligence

    Other ships
    USS Euryalus
    USS Temeraire
    USS Minotaur
    Eight other vessels

There you go Dan, I have even given the windows a wipe

Wasn't the Victory a Constellation-class starship. At least it was in the 2nd season of TNG. But I presume it was decommissioned in the interim and the name given to the new ship.

Ghostly, you were right she was a Constellation class. It saddens me to see that my countries most famous warship name atatched to such a pile of junk.

Constellations weren't pieces of junk when they were new. They just became junk when newer more sexy models came on line. So lets let Victory live on as a bigger and better ship. I mean the Americans already have Enterprise and the Japanese got Yamato and a host of others Akagi for one. More British ship names please. Well okay, the Sovereign-class is presumably named after the Royal Soveriegn. But still why has there not been an Ark Royal.

To be honest, the equal of the Enterprise would be the Ark Royal, as you said, a good choice for a Sovereign class. (The Royal Sovereign isn't even a british ship name, just one appropriate for the class.)

The Victory is the equal of your USS Constitution, and as such the ancient Man O War remaiuns a commissioned ship, even as a museum in DryDock.

Captain Craig, remember, that while the Victory was a Constellation, there hasn't been a USS Constitution since Kirks Time... So I dont think it was a personnal slight against us Brits! <G>

As an aside I am fairly sure I heard reference to the USS Victory during the Dominion war arc, but they never mentioned if it was the same ship as the Constellation class seen in TNG...

Okay Dan, the Constellation was nice and shiny when it was launched, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A BADLY DESIGNED FRIZBEE.

As for the USS Constitution, with it been a class name, probably cannot be used again.
I suppose we will have be be satisfied with the USS Hood.

All in all your points are taken onboard.

Any commets about the ship itself?

    Thumbs up

Nice design, Captain. Suggestion: Pair this ship with that upgraded Ramses class escort I built (not designed!) and you have an unbeatable combo!

Well it certainly looks shiny and well balanced. I like the background you added, nice piece of work there, as I have said before I tend to go number blind when I look at stats, so the history and background are quite important to me.

One thing, how did this vessel handle itself during the war? I get the feeling that there were only small numbers constructed at that time, but a brief synopsis covering their operational strengths and weaknesses? Maybe Admirals used them like Miranda's, Putting them into line holding and escort positions instead of using the ships full strengths? That sort of thing...

    And heres a couple more Identities for you, trying to keep the theme you started;

    USS Golden Hind
    USS Mary Rose
USS Indefatigable (if its not already allocated to a Defiant)
    USS Hornblower
    USS Drake (as in Francis)
Keep going until you use up the Royal Navy's History...

The blurb sound REALLY good now...

BTW, did you have a physical picture or a mental picture of what this ship looks like? I would be interested in 'seeing' it.

Well Dan this is a link to a picture created by Kightcat

My only wish is that it has smaller nacelles, they are huge. That been said I can't draw a straight line without help.
