Thread: Series seeds

  1. #136
Here's my current series. Most of its either orginal species I created or my version of a crossover.

Star Trek: Shattered Empires (Not to be excues with Star Trek Shattered Empire which has already been mentioned. )

Its 2380, and the Federation is still not fully recovered from the Dominion War. Ship wise, the Federation has been reduced to using species militia as support for Starfleet. Public Relation are also on a low point thanks to the attack on Earth, and the invasion of Batzeid, which were thought to be the best defended systems in Federation. My crew is on the U.S.S. Qey'Nos a Qey'Nos-class carrier that was designed to not only be a fighter carrier, but also a mobal outpost. Cammanded by Captain Coats (Inside running joke with this series, all the major characters are either named after me, my familly, or look like me as in the case when Q showed up, ), the Qey'Nos must not only explore the edge of Federation space looking for more allies and more resources, but also must battle some new threats.

The first episode introduced the crew to my first new threat, the "Primes" (I know its not the most orginal name, but it was all I could come up with within a few weeks of thinking.), a race of replicated mass produced bodies that each have an unique "brain wave" that is in its self replicated at random from thier own database of their founders. What make them so dangerous is not only do they accully feed off Phased energy, but they are immune to most phaser fire. Thier ships are organic, and they also drain phaser fire. Thier first encvounter was on the resupply base of Gamma Theta IV, which is now called the Massicure of Gamma Theata IV, only two survived. (I had only two players at the time.) This added some fear within the crew as they still have yet to turn their phasers down from max One big thing is that the Prime are a race without any culture. They only take ideas from othere species and make it work within their own society. Infact the one ship the crew has borded, was desiged identical to the Intripid class, only organic.

The second new threat was an old one, but with a new twist, with Grand Nagus Rom killed in an "accident" the Ferngi Alliance is back to their old trick, but this time they really do have allies. With the help of the Naucicans, Yradians, Suliban, (Hensar, they are a race I created for this series as a species that was a mamber of the Federation, but left to join the Ferengi Alliance when they "bribed" their rulling counsil. They developed their own cloacking device, but they never shared it with the Federation"), Orians, and the Wadi to name a few. They now want more then just trade and commerce, but power and territory, which is easer then ever since the Dominion War. I have been trying to prove that the Ferengi can be a threat, but in truth, I have had some issues with this.

The Thrird major threat is a Peacekeeper Corps. Like a clone of the Federation this intergalatic empire has only recently made contact with the Federation. While both empires share a love for science, exploration, and have a large number of member species all working together for the great glory of the galaxy. What differs is that the Peacekeeps never developed the Prime Directive, a fact that the Peacekeepers have great pride in. One big twist is that they use Organic ships kinna like the Primes, but they are different. They play very much like another Federation, but they think the Prime Directive is a waste of time, and consider it savage to "let" fate decide the future of the newer species.

The last plot twist that will be revieled soon, will revielved soon to the crew, but you all get a sneak peak..... they will find a machine that was designed to create wormholes, but only oneway wormholes. In order to get back they must find another wormhole machine. Not sure where the first one goes, but I'm thinking the Pegsous galaxy, but not really sure yet. They can go anywhere, but they are impossable to replicate, which makes them very important.....

This is all for now, let me know what you think, by the way the theme song to this series was voted on by the crew, and we decied on "Through the Flame and Fire" by Dragonforce, which lucky for the crew is my favorite song. I think they have been playing to much Munchickin,

An idea I'm playing with if I get the chance.

    Star Trek: Poseidon.
    Era: Post destruction of Romulus.
    Ship: USS Poseidon (Intrepid class).
A classic TOS era format with mixture of exploration past the top of the Romulan Empire towards the Delta Quadrant using data from USS Voyager. The ship and crew will get called back to known space to aid where necessary against a rogue faction of Romulans, the Alpha Dominion (what's left of it) and dealings with established races and planets. Plus they'll have the chance to encounter new worlds and new civilisations as they progress to the Delta Quadrant.

I have a potential three players for this, so I'm pondering captain, first officer and either science or medical positions.

Now with opening credits and season 1 trailer.

    Star Trek: F.S.O

    Era: Enterprise
Ship: FSO Cavalier; various ports of call allied to Earth
    Concept: Blackwater in space
Freelance Security Opperatives help protect Earth's merchant ships from pirates and rogue elements of various galactic cultures. With Starfleet just getting itself off the ground, and the reputation of Humanity not yet set, the owners of various merchant vessels and cargo ships hire FSO's to protect their ships, cargo and crews.
While not as powerful as a "ship of the line", they do have the best weapons and equipment available. Crewed by a diverse bunch of characters, mostly from starfaring/military backgrounds, they act as escorts and defenders of their client's ships. They have, in the past, investigated theft and recovered stolen items/persons. While holding no "offical" military or law enforcement standing, they are allowed to opperate in the best interests of their clients and their employer. (however, many people back on Earth don't like the idea of 'hired guns' doing what their own Starfleet should be doing) In the empty edges of the space lanes, an FSO ship is a welcome sight for many "Space boomers", but in the halls of the Earth Senate, their days are numbered.

Got this idea catching the "space boomer" episode of ENT, after having a discussion about how things in our world would never be like Treks. So, after watching a freighter take on a pirate ship, I thought that if that happened to some company today, they'd hire a 'private security firm' to protect their investment. Maybe it would be mall cops, or maybe it would be Blackwater, depending on the company and/or the investment. So the wheels turned, and in my brain, a offically sanctioned "necessary evil" came out.

Tricky, I recently viewed that same episode of ENT, and it bugged me as much as it did the first time it was on. When you catch pirates in the act, you don't just let them go to do the same thing to the next passing freighter, you destroy their ships and their bases! Whoever wrote that one really needs to relearn the history of the Barbary corsairs and the birth of the US Navy. "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!"

Anyway, you've got an interesting idea for a campaign. I'd play in that one.

I really like a lot of what you've done here, Gispert! My series also takes place in 2380, though it's quite different (as it takes place in and around the Romulan Neutral Zone).

I especially like the Primes; I just may have to use a similar concept (with immunity to phaser fire), as I think it would be a fun way to challenge my crew (plus encourage pulling out weapons like the bat'leth!).

Love the trailer, Eryx! With our series I've found it tough to keep the Chief Medical Officer busy enough; other good options include Security Chief, Ops Officer, and Flight Control. Best of luck with your series!

Some ideas regarding rpg ing in the new timeline after the latest movie

    Title: Starfleet Academy and beyond

Hello guys, my first post on this site is this one.

So, I want to start up an old campain that centered around Starfleet cadets in the early days of the UFP. Now, I want to move towards the new version of the TOS era instead, having the characters in starfleet academy during the time om star trek 11.

So, I want to start up during the academy days due to the fact that my team of players are not that in to star trek. I need to focus on character development.

In the background is of course the last unicorn supplement Starfleet academy, I use that as a base for the setting but I´m doing it the TOS way instead of TNG.

I want the characters to be able to buy off their flaws and gain edges during the adventures... they need to get their flaws under control to be able to graduate.

I also want to make adventures focused on character relations to academy instructors, general adventure and relations with their families and friends in an outside of starfleet.

In episode one they faced some trials that were a part of being accepted in to starfleet. It continued with some courses and some competition about girls and becoming the best in the class.
Other ideas (i am asking for more from you guys, any input would be helpful)
    1. One character trains for the first olympics with partidicpants from all over the UFP. During the olympics the characters need to keep the terrorists Terra Prime from setting off a bomb at the arena.

    2. An archeological find brings an energy being to campus. It feeds on fear. Investigation feeling

    3. Survival training. The class stumble upon smugglers and have a chance to do good. Or is it just a test set up by starfleet...?

    4. Summer job. Enlisting on a freighter to do some "space booming". They end up in tense negotiations and criminals trying to steal their cargo.

    5. Piloting training that goes bad when klingon marauders capture them all and forces them to fight for their lives in a gladiator arena somewhere close to rigel.

After graduation they have different shakedown cruises but they end up on the same ship after the shakedown year.

So, what do you guys think of the set up of the campaign or series?

Welcome to the forums, Orville. Things are generally pretty slow here, but there's a few of us who still stop by from time to time.

Sounds like you've got a lot of things happening at SFA. Some people might think it's too much for a believable story, but if you and your players enjoy it, that's what matters. It's all make believe anyway, and there wouldn't be much point in making it up if there weren't any interesting incidents going on every year at Hogwart's -- I mean, at Starfleet Academy.

I'm wondering about the shakedown cruises, do you intend to play through each one individually before bringing the players back together, or just narrate that a year has passed and the classmates are reuniting with a new assignment?

Hogwarts... well I guess you could call it that. Thanks for welcoming me.

So, perhaps I am squeezing to much in to the academy story, then I´ll just delete a few storylines and go on to a regular series.

I intend to create a story for each character to have as shakedown cruise. Perhaps if I come up with a reason as to why they´d end up on the same ship it could be narrated and made to an adventure on it´s own.

The focus on the academy episodes is to develop the characters beyond the stats on the paper.

BTW, any good character background stuff out there? I found something once that was for a d6 game of some sort but I lost it...

Sounds like a fun series, Orville, and welcome to these boards!

I especially like your Klingon adventure seed, though a lot of them sound fun. I wouldn't worry too much about packing lots of adventure in. Think about TOS, and how in three years they had nearly 80 adventures worthy of an episode on TV, plus a bunch more animated ones (not to mention all of the other stories from books, comics, etc.).

Another idea that I think would be fun would be doing something similar to what we saw with Wesley Crusher for his TNG Academy adventure. A good moral dilemma where cadets have to choose between the rules and loyalty to their friends.

Best of luck with your series!

They sound like great adventure threads. I would run with any of them, except maybe number 5 - I am not sure how they would find their way out of that one. Gladiator pits are none to friendly to the young and inexperienced.

Narrator: Darkening of Mirkwood | Chronicle of the North | Tempest Rising | To Boldly Go | Welcome to the 501st!
    Esgalwen [♦♦♦♦○○] Dmg 9/11 | Edge 8 | Injury 16/18
Nimronyn [Sindarin Pale gleam] superior keen, superior grievous longsword - orc bane, Foe-slaying
    Shadow bane, Skirmisher

Serge. Tomcat and Doug Taylor. Thank you for your input on my series seed (quoted below). It was kind of fun to get completely seperate views on episode 5 plot with the klingons. To develop that I intend to have the pc:s try to beat the klingons outside the pit. Somehow, find a way to contact starfleet or similar. The challenge will be to outsmart the klingons, not outmuscle them despite the fact they, or at least some of them will have to fight.

Another thing. I am right now involved in a burning wheel game and that game focuses a lot on charcacter traits and a system of beliefs. I want to incorporate that part in to my star trek game. So I would have every character write a belief about them being on the academy. What is their short term goal? Something like: Cadet Julie is so hot I want to ask her out but I don´t have the guts. I need to win a "INSERT SPORTS GAME HERE" to gain the confidence to ask her out. The other belief should center on something outside the academy. The characters friends, family or a business relation or similar. The third will center on their goal after graduation. OR the best way to achieve graduation. Like i need to work on my arrogance, It will get me kicked out of the academy before I graduate.

I also want to introduce relationships that complicate the series. Like:
Dark secret: the cadet has failed a physical examination and would have been kicked out from the academy but the cadet discovered that the doctor leading the exam. was a drug addict and now they have a deal. The cadet says nothing adn the doc. stays quiet. Then the doctor starts to fail treating paitents and so on... what will the cadet do?

Do you guys have any similar stories I could introduce to further develop NPC and PC interaction in the academy part of the series?

    Hello,

I planned to introduce those kinds of relationship too on my serie.

One of the relation will be with a character of the command branch. Second officer on a small starship, stationned on a starbase (mostly like the defiant and DS9)

The captain of the starship is the mentor or the idol (not sure of the word, english is not my first language) of the character...But alas, after the Dominion war, this captain was very impacted. I wanted to made him an alcoolic, or an hyper aggressive, wanting to remember the war and fight feelings...So he will do more and more transgression to the starfleet code, or several mistake like being asleep in his office instead of managing the bridge.

I hope the character involved will, at the beginning, clean up the mess...but will after hesitate and try to find a solution.

Second idea. One of the character play a ferengi (but i presume it can be used with any other non federation species). As he didn't know any high ranked officer to write him a recommendation to be able to enter starfleet, he bribed one.
Of course this will be a dark secret flaw.
This can be discovered, or someone can discover this and blackmail the ferengi.

Hope this can help you and give you some ideas.
