A few notes on Klingon ship design:
1) In my game, Klingons have that militaristic manifest destiny type of thinking. Most ships carry military troops, and this is reflected in the game stats under passengers and also the number of emergency transporters.
2) My gaming group reasoned that based on a cold war mentality that the Federation and Klingon empire experienced, each side attempted to match and counter the other.
3) Klingon ship design in LUG points to a weaker shield design and in certain eras, weaker warp drives and impulse engines. This is not always the case, but a keen observer will notice it.
4) The Klingon Empire experiences a slowdown in warp and impulse engine development as their economy gradually weakens from the 2270's to the mid 2290's. As a result, they cannot keep up with Federation warp design and especially impulse design (you can see this carries over in LUG's Klingon designs of the TNG and DS9 periods).
5) Klingon ships are deadly. FASA loved rear firing disruptors and torpedoes (I've labled 3 types of torpedoes, the Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3). To compensate for this, I've increased the range of Federation torpedoes in the late 2280's to match the LUG version of the Exclesior and left the Klingon torpedo ranges the same in the TOS Era to the Movie Era (but, some designs have really kickin' Plasma bolts due to the exchange with the Romulans).
LUG likes giving big Klingon ships a lot of torpedoes (One of my players, in character, said to his Vulcan subordinate, "Who needs 800 torpedoes?" The other player, playing the Vulcan, totally deadpan, raised his eyebrow and said, "A Klingon." then promptly left the table to stuff a slice of pizza in his mouth.).
You'll see this reflected in the battleship designs (the torpedoes, not the pizza).
