Ok, here's my spur-of-the-moment attempt at a Private Investigator...it's certainly open to revision, if anyone has any ideas.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Private Investigator

A hand phaser, hidden in a long coat. A knowing smile and a watchful eye, hidden under the concealing shadow of a hat. These are just some of the tools of the private investigator, a sly master of the streets, who always seems to know how to find the right clue to solve the mystery. Private investigators can be found wherever a civilized community exists, and always seem to have an air of mystery about them, be it from a past that they don’t want to talk about, to that certain guy or doll in their lives, that always seems to turn up at just the wrong time.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It still needs some professional packages and related stuff, which I'll try and come up with later. If anyone has any ideas for those, let's see'em!

    Gumshoe Academy

Off the top of my head, here's an 8 point academy package

    Search 1 OR Disguise (Choose) 1 (2)
    Law (Choose) 1 (2)
    + 1 Reaction edge
    + 1 Rival OR Contact

I'd kinda like to see Disguise in there somehow. Haven't quite figured it out yet.

BTW, Greg, nice work on the overlay!

Glad to see these postings! Keep up the good work.

I'm pretty sure "Rival" is a DISadvantage. A +1 contact is a good idea though- perfectly fits the genre.

    DUH! I deserve that.

Well. As civilian training packages are 9 points, I cant see Starfleet Academy running these detectives.

    So my alternate would be;

    Gumshoe Detective;
A detective of the 'old school', hands on and street wise. Either an operative of the local law enforcement branch, or a Private Investigator. Specialising in finding the clues that the criminals overlooks and doggedly chasing their suspect until the evidence is found.
'Gumshoes' are still romanticised in the popular media, although the reality is rarely as depicted.

    Search 1 or Intimidate (Choose) 1 (2)
    Disguise (Choose) 1 (2) or Streetwise (Choose) 1 (2)
    Law (Choose) 1 (2)
    -1 Rival
    +1 Contact

    Good point

Methinks I need to become more familiar with my books in the near future!

    Thanks for catching that Dan.

    /me shakes dust off thread.

BUMPITY BUMP BUMP, look at Frosty.. er... ok.

How's about an overlay for vigilantes?

I've got a weird character idea in my head. Superman ported over to Trek. Basically I see an Elaysian vigilante (self-appointed crusader for justice).

Anyone want to take a shot? I could just use a "plain vanilla" security officer, but I thought I'd ask around first.

Er Perrryyy, The Elaysians can only "fly" in low gravity. So, apart from their homeworld and a few others , your "Superman" would have to have the normal wheelchair (or a Bat or Bond chair (tm) )

Has you Party membership run out. Or being revoked. Surely the leader of the mighty Elaysian invasion should know this

Yeah I thought about that but I thought I'd propose the question anyhow

I could use the vigilante idea for other characters too, though.

    SPOILERS FOR GEMWORLD 1

As an aside, Melora Pazlar had an antigrav suit that worked with the E-E's gravity systems. Surely if enginneers can create an anti-grav suit, they can create a suit that allows one to appear to fly in normal gravity? Or maybe the character has something similar to the boots Spock used in TFF when he saved Kirk from his rock climbing debacle?

Ok so mixing genres doesn't work!

    Geez some people!

    Just ignore me.

I'm obviously too DUMB for this board anymore.

    It DOES work

On the contrary, I had great success mixing the genres. Use of the Flight Suit from "Price of Freedom" or Spock's STV jet boots is perfectly appropriate.

I had a rather extensive discussion in another thead describing and adventure I ran where the players were forced to adopt the role of super-heroes on a primitive planet in order to AVOID violating the prime directive. (yes, that's counter-intuitive but the circumstances worked). It was so popular that I had to run a sequel. Let me find that other discussion:
    Inadvertant Superheroes

Thing is Perrryyy, that Vigilante is only one type of superhero... and for more suited to the Anti-Hero than to ole' Supes.

I would apply the moniker Vigilante to Punisher, Batman, Dead Pool, and even Spidey (on occassion).

But Superman isanother kettle of fish. I think he would suit an altered Law enforcement package better, with upgraded skills and some code of honour flaws... (using the Supoerman template)... Other Superheros are kind of blurry though.

I cannot argue that some will suit Vigilante, some will suit Soldier overlays, and others are just too odd to pin down that easy, and will require a home-brewed template.

Knowing how you think with characters, I really think that this third option is by far the better one...

I have hoever been considering a new template for this category, that of the 'Psi Cop' (for want of a better term)...
