    Journey to Babel

It's got Spock's parents, Andorians, Tellarites, fistfights and space battles, sad moments and funny moments. It's just fun.

It's a hard choice to make, but Balance of Terror wins for me. Kirk at his best, Mark Lenard's clever, honourable Romulan Commander. And a real sense of mystery and discovery. And tension.

    It's a classic.

Thumbs up The Conscience of the King

The Conscience of the King is a great TOS episode. Although there's no "political" stuff with Rommies or Klingons, Anton Karidian (aka Kodos the Executioner) is a great guest character, and the fact that his daughter Lenore turns out to be the actual murderer of all the witnesses of Kodos' massacre on Tarsis IV was a great twist. This one has a great Shakespearean backdrop with Karidian running an acting company and some of the best-delivered lines in any of the original series episodes.

Themes of vengeance, mercy, ghosts of the past ... total Shakespeare! Two thumbs up from me!

I must agree with Steven, the Conscience of the king is a great episode with great acting and it's in my top 5 (though I prefer City as a sci fi story, first episode on my list).

    Balance of Terror

Balance of terror is the one I liked best, though there are many others. Journey to Babel, Elaan , most of them are mentioned here....

Balance of Terror is my all time fav episode. Mark Leonard made the Romulans for me.

Conscience of the King get very high marks with me as well. The twist I thought that made the show for me was Kodos (Karidian) was a "tyrant" who truely regretted what he did in the past, he made a bad decsion and lived with the ghosts of those who he had killed. A good man who had to make a very hard choice, too bad he hadn't waited those few extra days.

From the list given ... I'd have to chose "City on the Edge of Forever" in a narrow victory over "Balance of Terror". Unlike Harlan Ellison, I don't really feel the accidental overdose ruins the story. While "Balance...' is a good retelling of The Enemy Below, I feel like the characterization was stronger in "City...", and the plot tighter. YMMV.

I can't make up my mind between Mirror, Mirror and Doomsday Machine...

MM has the best Kirk soliloquy in TOS (the "one man" speech), but DM has the edge in pathos and tension.

"Matt ... there is no fourth planet..."
"You think I don't know that!!! There was ... there was ..."

Leaving this list, I think one of my favorites has to be "The Corbomite Maneuver".

Actually, Decker's line was "Don't you think I know that? There was...but not anymore!"
