    Star Dates !

I'm sure this is a question that has been answerd or at least talked about many times here before....but I'm new to this board so I'll ask anyway.

Has enyone figured out, or have a s good referance chart of the stardates used in ALL the ST series???

What I mean is, have they been put into a working date system for the newer ST games systems (LUG) or are they just randome numberd dates as they always seemed to be when watching the shows??

I ask because I'm still useing the old version 1 FASA system...

My game is currently set in the earth year October 2303

By the FASA rules the current date in my game October 6 2303...

Would be translated into Stardate: 0310.06

    03=year 2303 , 10=month October , 06=day in this case Saturday
(Info from page 100 ST:TRPG basic rulebook)

*NOTE in the FASA sourcebook The Federation they list a slightly different stardate system....with Jan 1 2000 AD being the "zero" year . For instance the source book lists the founding of the Federation as:

    Stardate: 0/8706.06 ....(June 6th 2087)... instead of 8706.06

I guess in my long winded way I'm asking if the newer versions of ST:RPG have worked out a better (more in line with the TV shows) Stardate system??

    Thanks
    Wolf.

    The Trickiness of Stardates

I'll take a stab at this one...

For The Original Series I'm not entirely sure how they did the stardate system, but when The Next Generation rolled around, they used the following method: Let's say that the stardate is 47889. The way the writers came up with this number was as follows: 4 - because it was the 24th century, 7 - because it was the 7th season, and 889 - to represent how far along in the season (in terms of 001 to 999) that they were.

Not a wholly accurate system, by any means, but it worked.

When Deep Space Nine and Voyager came about, they used the same system, based on the current system of stardates, and just rotated the numbers as necessary.

Well, I think that this is accurate, and I hope that it was helpful. If it helps, I think that there is a section in the Next Generation Players' Guide by LUG that talks about Stardates.

There are several quite good stardate programs available on the net if you do a search for them. If I was at my pc at home right now, I could send you the one we use. It is pretty good, but less accurate for TOS dates. That said, it's highly accurate for TNG onwards dates.

I'll look out some links when I get home, if you haven't found them already

And 1 day equals 2.7 StarDates.

The rest sounds about right. Voyager gets home in the 54000 range.

    http://trekker.ru/info/stdate.htm

Enjoy, but a Google Search for Stardate Calculator whould help

Also on http://www.startrek.com you will find each series lists the Stardates for each episode that has them.

    Hope this helps

This is the one I use...it works well for me, but I am dubious how well it work for dates earlier in the 24th century...it does work very well though for TNG-DS9-VOY era dates.

    Thanks for the reply's all

I have not looked at the links yet, but will.

What I'm going to look at trying to do is create a single Stardate system that can be used all the way back to the founding of the UFP.

For The Original Series I'm not entirely sure how they did the stardate system, but when The Next Generation rolled around, they used the following method: Let's say that the stardate is 47889. The way the writers came up with this number was as follows: 4 - because it was the 24th century, 7 - because it was the 7th season, and 889 - to represent how far along in the season (in terms of 001 to 999) that they were
Now thats pretty interesting, I did not know the TNG stardates were more of a production number then some attempt at a real date system....so for all intents and purposes the TNG date's are worthless to use as a "real" date.

    Admiral Wolf,

None of the Stardates used in TOS or TNG were designed as a real dating system. The TOS ones were sort of a last minute add on to give the show a more futeristic feel. The producers would advance the stardates between episodes to give the illusion of the regular passage of time. Since some TOS episodes had more complicated ofical effects than others, some took longer to finish than others, resulting in the show being aired out of sequence. As a result Stardates jumped around a bit during TOS.

There was an article in CHALLENGE magazine for making sense of aired Stardates for the FASA TREK RPG. It worked out to the first season on TNG (whentthe article was printed) and was designed around the FASA timeline (the cannon one didn'tt exist yet-although ENTERPRISE will probably make the cannon timeline obsolete).

Attempts to make the TOS and TNG stardating systems compatable run into a snag: one year in TNG is 1000 stardates. This means that the TNG stardate 00001 would be sometime in 2323, approximately 54 years after TOS!

Here are the Stardates as they have been computed byStarFleet Command from their Membership Handbook. It is based on the "Julian Calender", as it was designed by Julias Ceasar on Jan 1st, 4713 B.C.

Now as of the printing of this particular book, they use Jan 01, 1986 as a start and that count is 2,226,428 days since Jan 01,4713 B.C.

So the StarDate would be 6428 .

Now on to the point 0-9 is the time frame refrence.
(This is in Military Time, any number larger then 12 you subtract 12 from to get standard Time)

    1848-2111 Point 0
    2112-2335 Point 1
    2336-0159 Point 2
    0200-0423 Point 3
    0424-0647 Point 4
    0648-0911 Point 5
    0912-1135 Point 6
    1136-1359 Point 7
    1400-1623 Point 8
    1624-1847 Point 9

this is what the Star Date would look like 6428.6 .
    Todays Stardate is 11906.6
