    New Frontier...

Anyone here been reading the Star Trek: New Frontier books? I really quite liked them at the beginning, and the last one or two has seemed to get over the middle slump books...

Something I didn't like overmuch however, was the temporal transplanting of M'Ress and Arex into the latest book of the series - I mean, jeez, do we have to rely on characters from the TOS era just to make the books interesting? (Don't answer that... lol).

I've read them all. I thought the use of Scotty was good but the inclusion of the other TOS characters wasn't the best idea. My favorite character has to be Zak Kebron. I have the Gateways New Frontier but I haven't read it yet.

    Ugh.

I hate New Frontier. A pity too, because once upon a time Peter David was one of the best Trek writers out there. Now he just churns out derivative fanfic soap opera and cheesy humour (IMHO).

I mean come on, ripping off characters from the Animated Series? How low can this guy go. It's bad enough he has an omnipotent character on the ship, not to mention, the issue of Lefler's parentage, and the lousy way he writes both Selar and Shelby.

Well, each to their own I guess, but it just isn't to my taste.

And what's worse about NF, the following characters are NOT original, they are from a junior series Starfleet Academy trilogy that David wrote:

    Kebron
    Soleta
    McHenry

And of course, Shelby is pulled from "Best of Both Worlds."

Really, what is wrong with that? How are they not original, he wrote the Academy series, he made them up...I don't see a problem here. I personally like all the characters, Calhoun I would have to say is one of the best Captains they've used. Though I will admit I have only read the first couple of novels. At the beginning I thought it was a neat idea, getting away from the Enterpise crew (like they are the only ship in the fleet) and dealing with a new crew and ship. I still think that. My problem is NF are like all the novels...BORING! The most boring episode of Trek is 10 times more exciting then anything I have read in the novels. Oh well. (shrugs)

    Just my two cents.

I think I missed that reference - Was "Mugato" supposed to spike something in my mind? I know you mean ENsign Janos, but I didn't realize Mugato as a race had been seen already...

Calhoun is (of course, always IMHO) an ass. I suppose it depends what you like in your captains. But the idea that Picard would have ANY respect for this beligerent jerk (let alone be his biggest flag-waver) is beyond belief. Even Kirk wouldn't tolerate this guy's antics, or attitude.

Mugatos, while we're here, are a non-sentient race of white gorilla-like animals with poison fangs, and a horn. I don't care what explanation he offers for having one sentient and in Starfleet. It's just plain daft.

But, having said all that, this is just my opinion, and my taste. if you like and enjoy NF, more power to ya. Different strokes for different folks, an' all that So no offense intended.

Picard sees what Calhoun could become, a great officer and ship commander.

I think Calhoun is more "real" then the other Captains...You punch Calhoun in the face, he returns the favour. He doesn't try to explain why doing that was wrong...He shows you why it was wrong.

BTW as to the what I like in Captains...I was almost hopeing that Jellico was going to replace Picard in the series...Almost. I would like to see a "hawk" as the CO of the Enterprise.

That is his biggest crime IMHO, turning Jellico into a comic book villain on the level with the evil guy in Police Academy...

Edward Jellico was presented in "Chain of Command" as a competant officer and an excellent tactician, who wasn't huggy and cuddly about things. But David turns him into the Peguin or the Joker formt he 60s TV show, or worse that army Col from the A-Team who was always one step behind them.

I agree with you Capt Zymmer. He did not do Jellico or Shelby justice to be sure. But I still like Calhoun.

I'm beginning to think I shouldn't have started this thread! LOL.

Actually, I agree about the Mugato (now that I realize what he was supposed to be... damn!), I *totally* agree about Jellico (they promoted him to get him out of the way? I beg your pardon?), but I rather like *most* of what he did with Shelby (though not her wishy-washy weak-kneed romance for Calhoun). I thought he had Lefler down wonderfully until her ma showed up, and absolutely love Kebron.

Calhoun? don't like him much... *hangs head in shame, and waits for the barrage to begin*

I agree on this point, Captain. Apparently Peter David's not the only one. For some reason, certain fanfic writers do the same thing to the guy...
As for Calhoun...anyone read the Wildstorm graphic novel Out of Time? Calhoun travels back in time to save a race that was eradicated by the Redeemers. As a result of his actions, the race will be enslaved in the future and the Excalibur goes missing for a Year(!).I have a feeling the Department of Temporal Investigations will want to string up Calhoun between the Warp Nacelles for this...
