    But it is soccer

Coming from a Aussie's perspective. After having three grades of football (all subtley different) then having a game of soccer called football by Europeans is plain silly

As a soccer fan, and a player in both high school and college (I was a goal keeper, in case you couldn't figure it out from my alias ) I would like to thank Dan for the congrats! I consider it high praise when a Briton congatulates our fledgling effort over here in the States.

I think SIG's referring to that violent exhibition of sport called Aussie Rules...I love watching it on cable once in a while. Great game where if there isn't a punch up sometime during the game its dead boring.

Dan, the England performance on Saturday was pathetic if it wasn't for a bit of luck and "bad" refreeing, England would have to take a long trip to the Ukraine...

But 'Pathetic' seems a tad harsh. It was far closer to a 'poor performance'.

After all the national team seems to be doing a lot better recently, since the lineup started to move away from the standard Manchester United showing and Sven took over.

And there was us blasting a foreigner as manager of the National Team...

Hard, Painful lesson learned- NEVER GET IN A FIGHT WITH A RUGBY PLAYER- let alone with most of the team in the same room.

*yawns bored, remembering that the Argentinian team has 10 points of advantage on the elimination rounds... and the fact that we're already qualified for the World Cup*

    How's that going, England?

    American version of Football...

I'm still trying to work out why the Americans call their version "football" - after all, they almost never kick the ball, so the use of the word "foot" is somewhat erroneous...

Rule 1; 'Argentinian Team' and 'World Cup in the same statement can still cause nervous twitches in many British fans... At least you never mentioned the word 'Hand'...

The lager has not quite erased THAT memory yet!!!

Other than that. Our qualification seems to be going fine. Which probably means we have a hell of a defeat coming, going by our previous track record.

I am glad nobody so far has mentioned the German team.

I hope they never make it into any major cup anymore until they can win more than one game a decade by good playing and not just dumb luck.

    Mixed Feelings

I'm a bit confused - as a Scot of course I'm disappointed that we can't go to the World Cup to get knocked out in the first round , but as a resident of Ireland (and semi-assimilated at this stage) I'm cheering our fellow Celts on. Why can't Scotland play like the Irish?

Oh, and commiserations to Robert Raetts - but the best team won out in the end !

Congrats to USA and Argentina (oh, and England as well ).

It cant be that difficult, just make like the 1990 World Cup, when neither Scotland nor England qualified, and the entire nation suddenly found its Irish Roots!!!

Course the question is. If the Scots and Irish can have national teams. Do the Welsh?
