There was, at the very least, some trade between the First Fed and the United Fed. In several episodes of TNG and DS9 (DS9's "Facets" being the only one I can remember for certain), people order the drink "Tranya", which was described in "The Corbomite Maneuver" as a drink from the First Fed homeworld.
