What is the name of the Strikefighter

What is the class of the Starfleet Strikefighter...surely it must have a name. I read some reference to "Valkyrie" somewhere of other but is that official?

I'd prefer to call it Tomcat II in recognition of the classic naval fighter of 'em all. Plus it'll give those aspiring "Top Guns" something familiar...yes I admit i stole this idea from SFB...but hey when it works don't fix it.

As far as I know, ghosty, the fighters seen in DS9 are known simply as "Starfleet Attack Fighters" and do not have a class name. The term "Valkyrie" refers to the more advanced fighters that are used in the PlayStation game Star Trek: Invasion.

Yep. Starfleet Attack Fighter. Thats the one, and indeed, the Unofficial name given by Steve Long in the Dominion War Sourcebook...

This I presume is from Sisko in the Space battle scenes. While refering to Galaxy wings and the like he ALWAYS refers to them as Attack Fighters.

But if you want to call them Tomcat II's feel free...

Personally I see them as SAF's purely because I prefer the anti-martial Starfleet, they were a tool of neccesity rather than choice, and thus were simply designated by the ggeneric name in the knowledge that many of their number would be mothballed come peacetime.

Personally, despite all that, I am a great fan of nose art, and feel that many of the SAF's would have been known by their crews by the dubbed name, although I see their official designation as being similar to shuttles... Bearing their host ships registration and a name...

It would have been nice to have seen some proof of nose art, like the B5 Starfurys...

Plenty of use for fighters even in peacetime.

And personally I would think that given the current attitudes in ship designs the fighters will be a staple for some time to come at least on border patrols and internal security missions.

Further, with the large number of ships destroyed strikefighters will have to fill in especially in the innerworlds (less vulnerable...or so they believe) until the damaged ships can come back on line and new ones are built.

Another thing, if you rip out those photon torpedo lunachers and replace them with bigger sensors, you can build an excellent reconissance fighter giving any starship captain more flexibility and an additional pair of eyes and ears.

You could also rip out the weapons and build an extremely high speed transport. It can warp 8 now...without the phasers I think it could hit warp 9.something. I'll have to do the maths with Spacedock.

Of course I don't intend to name every fighter but the strikefigther should be given a name I just find Strikefighter too much of a mouthful.

Like today's fighters, the fighter should bear a squadron insignia (I'd like to think some of the old Earth fighter squadrons continue to be represented). Each pilot would of course have his name, rank and callsign painted under the cockpit along with such usual add ons as kill markings.

IMHO, I wouldn't be suprised if shuttles and shuttlecarriers become a larger part of Starfleet in the Post-Dominion period. Shuttles and runabouts can carry out a variety of short range missions freeing up larger ships for other missions. Shuttlecarriers have the advantage of versatility in that the mix of shuttles can be changed to reflect a particular mission.
Fighters for patrol, research shuttles for science mission, hoppers for planetary missions etc...

    Arrow Fighters and Starfleet.

Interesting subject. A subject I like very much.

As some of you might now, I'm the CAG onboard the USS Vanguard which is in a Game that came out of the AkiraAirWing V D'Deredix simulation of spring2001. Therefore, I have had quite alot of contact with people who are in the know about this subject, and have worked with SAFs/Peregrines in the LUG system.

As stated above, Yes, the SAF/Peregrine in the preDW era was rare, and usually only found in the frontier of Federation space. There job was mainly for boarder security where larger vessels couldn't be allocated. Either that, or they were used in order to supplement the large number of Mirandas that use to (in the preDW era) fill the ranks of Starfleet for non priority sectors, especially those with raiders.

However, come postDW era, Starfleet is lacking large vessels and is streched VERY thin, almost to the point where it is becoming difficult to fulfill all the obligations that Starfleet use to take on in the preDW era. Therefore, the Air Wing, developed during the DW has become more and more common place.

An Air Wing of course being a group of Size 3 or less craft, of multiple designs capable of accomplishing multiple mission types. They are attached to 'Carriers' inorder to travel long distances (even though most of the major Air Wing 'Aircraft' can travel long distances themselves (Talon/Federation Scout, SAF/Peregrine, Danube). Most commenly used is a Variant of the Akira Class.

Starfleet Attack Fighter sounds cool, but it's a bit too militaristic, don't you think? Shouldn't it just be called Tacfighter?

And I personally think 'Air Wing' is a bit out of date. Just like 'Marines'...... (Robbert awaits the flames)

    Arrow OOG

    Narrator Raets,
We use the term Air Wing, as well as CAG, due to the historical reference, and the initial structure of the command which the aircraft that were attached to a vessel was set up.

Furthermore, the SAF, like any other 'Aircraft' carrys an official designation that being "Starfleet Attack Fighter." However, like most 'aircraft' they carry a nickname, in this case Peregrine (Peregrine Falcon, fastest Hawk on Earth).

It's kinda like the American Modern Cavalry, of which there is the 1st CAV, and the 11th CAV (The only active 'CAV' units currently). For all intensive purposes, due to unit structure and what not, they are Armored Commands (Division size in this case). However, due to unit liniage they are allowed to carry the Cavalry designation. But, they do have a couple horses (For ceremonial use only. It's not like you're going to charge at a modern infantry unit on horse back.)

Talking Air Wings, CAG's, and other Things

JALU3 gets to call his covey of SAF's an 'Air Wing' for the same reason his Chief of Flight Operations character is referred to by the ancient nickname of CAG (Carrier Air Group). CAG is infinitely sexier than CFO IMO. Groups of fighters in the Star Trek universe are generally referred to as Attack Fighter Wings. Once again, Air Wing is sexier than AFW. Think of it as Starfleet's historical connection to the wet navies of the distant past- a connection we've already seen in other ways on Star Trek, including a ship's bell for pete's sake!

As for the name of the Starfleet Attack Fighters, Peregrine is the only one remotely associated with the type presented during the Dominion Wars, so we call it the Peregrine in our sim (see Space Dock). In the across-the-table version of our game, the Akira class Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Vanguard carries a Talon class, a Danube class, 12 Peregrines, and a pair of the brand shiny new Valkyries. You have to go to Star Fleet Battles to find the Tomcats, Hornets, Warthogs, and other 'Fighter Shuttles' created for that game.

Hold your hourses there JALU3. The Peregrine designation is possibly the correct designation.

There is much contention over the exact ship the Peregrine class is, all that is known is that the only mention of a Peregrine class was in conversation about an unseen Maquis ship...

Most fans assume that it applies to the SAF as seen in Maquis use in 'The Maquis' or the slightly larger ships in Maquis use, such as Chakotays ship in 'Caretaker'.

While its perfectly acceptable to assume 1 or the other for the use of a game system, it is not a statement of fact (for the record I use the other, Chakotays 30 year old ship as the Peregrine class). Theres a web page all about it, I havn't got the URL anyone else got it?

I've never really been thrilled with the idea of fighters in Trek. However, if they have to be around I think Harrier sounds and feels right. Shrike could also be another possiblity, but that could lead to confusion with the Romulan Special Forces unit by the same name.

    Angry Wrong Game!!!

    No, no, no! Different game!

    ...but understandable interpretation.

Long before there was an Akira vs D'Deridex game on this board, I ran the first part of a campaign here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The basic background of the Vanguard being off in the Beta Quadrant looking for a rumored anti-Borg weapon was borrowed when I set up the AvsD game. The Vanguard in our round-the-table game had those goodies and a few more things that we don't have in our PBEM game.

So, no worries mate! No Valkyries (though I'm not sure how much of an advantage just 2 of them would be...).

    hehehe

    Just kidding

But considering the stats Brian wrote up for them. IMO I think 2 would make quite an impression.

You would let CAG mean Commander Aerospace Group. I assume the fighter can operate in an atmosphere. All fighters would have their "mothership's" name stenciled on along with a low vis unit insignia, unless you just can't live without the full color markings (sure they're pretty, but you're easier to see). I'm sure there are squadrons with all sorts of cool ideas for nose art and unit badges. You could even run a "Top Gun" campaign, have the best pilots in the fleet hone their skills in simulated combat, some in holodecks and some on the training flight range.
