The Changing Boards?

Well A couple of comments by others have promted this. But it does seem like the boards are changoing in tone and manners these days and I thought a poll measuring how many others feel was in order. This should be like a bullitian board if you want to make a reply and express you concerns to others post once and only once that is sufficent and should keep it from becoming a flame war. Avoid Quoting others and restate in your own words what others say if you have to reply directly to a previous post from some one else.

The Most Civilized Place on the Net

Sure, there's an occasional squabble, but that's the way it's always been. Even back in "The Good Ol' Days (tm)", there were heated arguments. Starfleet Marines, anybody?

Let's just keep things going the way they are, only boot the blatant trolls, and maintain the same policies we've had for the last couple of years.

As a grizzled board veteran I think the boards have been pretty consistent and think that this is one of the best forums for gaming and for Star Trek. To the best of my knowledge I can recall only one blatant troll. Most of my moderating has been to guide a thread back on-topic for its forum or to move a thread to a more appropiate forum.

Compare this with trekbbs.com - a place I really like with a lot of useful information and dialogue, but also a lot of flaming, trolling, name-calling, warnings, and the like.

In reality I've been reading thies boards for much longer than I've been a member (I first found this sight in Dec. '99, but forgot to bookmark it). The biggest change I've noticed is the people, and with more people comes more debate, some leed to slightly heated (do you smell smoke?) arguments, but all in all people here have maintained their composure.

    trolls

Hmm, may have been misunderstood. I was referring to the fact that this board does not have the trolling and name-calling so often found at other boards.

The only out and out troll I can truly think of from trekrpg.net is indeed the one and only Red Quacker, the less said about the better...

I think Robbert just took it outta context and was what I was replying to.

But your right Dan, compare to similiar Trek boards we are indeed blessed not to have the problems so many of them have.

    Thumbs up Bad Boards

I've only been posting here a short time, but from what I've seen so far you all are a pretty good bunch to have a "disscussion" with....this board is pretty good...trust me, I post and lurk around quite a few UBB's....this ones OK

I fly in a WWII online air combat sim WarBirds....there's and independant UBB where most of the "community" post Alt.Games.WarBirds.(AGW).

You want to see yelling and screaming and cussing, and general dweebary.....you should see what goes on there.

Don't get me wrong, theres a lot of nice/great posters there, but there is a lot of jack a$$'s as well.

Trust me, you guys are good egg's

Yeah, I've noticed a few changes. I reckon people have become more "snipey" over the last few months or so.

I remember when I first signed on (Nov last year, IIRC), and I was saying to friends "You've gotta see this board! Thousands of posts, and I've yet to see a single flame!"

That doesn't apply any more. Certainly, there is far less venom here than on any other board I've been on, but I do think people have become a little more defensive since about June or so.

Part of it, I think, is the proliferation of topics that tend to polarise people: gun control, religion, death penalty, etc. Over the last two months, of course, we've had Sept. 11 to talk over, and that's (understandably!) caused a lot of emotion to overflow as well.

All in all, I think the TrekRPG.net forums are still the most easy-going I've encountered, however, and IDIC applies here more than any other boards I've seen/frequented.

Let's keep up the (pretty) good work!

I don't think a lot has changed in the two-plus years I've been posting here.

When you accumulate over 1100 members, you're going to get a few who are a bit more sensitive to some issues than others, some who have a chip on their shoulder (I'm not pointing fingers or naming names, just making a general observation), and some who have blinkered vision regarding some topics.

But overall, I think we're a pretty even-tempered bunch here - we have a few flare-ups, but as a group we abide by our Moderators' decisions...and that's kudos to us, the posters, for keeping the peace like we do.

A personally found when dealing with Enterprise there were a few that got royally ticked when we didn't agree with their side...for or against. However you will always find people who cannot stand dissenting opinions and get all bent out of shape about it.

Even then, we haven't gotten to the venom I have seen in other boards.

Generally most of us have been very open and understanding. I true credit to the boards.

I've been gone for about 10 months now and just got home on vacation (and access to a computer). The changes I have seen are mostly cosmetic. I like the new look to the board (great job guys). Really the only other change I have seen is that there are a lot of new names and a lot of the old names missing. The past couple of days I've been trying to fathom which are simply name changes and which names are new new.

The boards are still very organised, professionally run, and very informative. Kudos on that.

For any new fellows on here, you have found an awesome site that I know you will enjoy. This is a great bunch of folks on here.

As for the "ole timers", nice to see you again.

I, too, enjoy the boards a great deal, and I've made several friends that I would have never known otherwise because of them.

Having said that, I won't say that I've noticed a change in the tone of the boards, but I will say that I notice a pattern in the boards. Occasionally, topics come up, such as Starfleet Marines, whether or not Starfleet is a military, and now Enterprise, just to name a few.

Typically, I avoid these conversations, as people often get extremely passionate about Trek, and their particular views of Trek. Having said that, though, this is the only message board that I actively participate on, and this is primarily due to the general manner in which the patrons of these boards conduct themselves. The people here are some of the most friendly Trek fans that I've ever come across, and I for one am thankful for that, as I do enjoy the opportunity to "talk Trek"...

Just my two cents...your two cents may differ!
