    Yesterday's War

As some of you (or all) know that I have an NPC from the parallel dimension of Yesterday's Enterprise. Originally, he was meant to last only an episode but fate intervened and well we're stuck with him for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, I'll need to flesh out his background a little with a bit of info about the other races in his alternate reality. We know the Federation was at war with the Klingons but where were the Romulans, Cardassians and the others.

I think the Romulans went into isolation, hiding behind their border fortifications to see what is the outcome of the war. Probably to clean up. No matter who wins, they would be weakened by war and the Romulans would jsut wipe the floor with them.
    Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deed awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shields be splintered,
    a sword-day, a red-day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Well, since the Klingon-Federation War basically started with the Romulan attack on Nerrandra III, I would say the Romulans would have gone laughing all the way home.

Plus the Romulans are fighting a war with the T'hauri (sp) right now too.

I imagine the Cardassians are anexing territory after territory since the UFP would be trying not to fight a war on two fronts...in fact the Cardassians may use the promise of military support like a carrot to the UFP, but the noble UFP "Never Compramise, Even in the Face of Armageddon" attitude may prevent the alliance.

    The Face of Armageddon

Personally I think the Federation would have thrown the rulebook out the window a long time ago. Total war and survival has a way of changing societies.

In the original fan-fic short story "Yesterday's War" written by a friend of mine, the Vulcans have thrown the rulebook out the window a long time ago and while still coldly logical, logic dictates that they must use all their resources to help the Federation win the war, so they have no qualms about mind melding with prisoners to extract information.

So the Feds would give the Cardassians concessions and hand over worlds to get Cardassian aid but the Cardassians never really join in, sending some old ships under mediocre commanders or commanders of dubious political reliability to "join" the fight usually running away if things go badly. In fact I can see them stabbing the Feds in the back and allying with the Klingons if the Klingons win the war.

Hrm. Good question. I remember that Troi also vanished (I guess a Counsellor doesn't really fit on a ship of war, LOL), but it makes you wonder about how militant the Betazoids might have become in the face of the Klingon onslaught - or if they, being the peace-lovers they are, signed a non-aggression pact? (Then again, being Betazoid, they'd probably sense that they'd likely not be able to trust the Klingons to be peaceful...)

The Vulcans would be harshly logical about things: Loss of ships to win space, etc etc. Might even go as far as Ghostly said and be nasty mind-melders for the right cause... Eep.

Romulans I see sitting back and laughing at the war they caused - might be an interesting episode in the alternate universe to break into the Romulan archives, find the record of the attack on Narendra, and bring the proof to the Klingons... Peace between the two of them with the Klingons in high power and the Federation low and barely working - and then the Klingons turn on the Romulans...

About the cold but desperate Vulcans, remember the Yoy episode with the world of telepaths that have a black market of violent thoughts? Tuvok shows one of the 'traders' how violent he can be..... Now that scared me....
The darkness inside me is a lot scarier than the darkness out there....

Actually, Phantom, it was the Narendra III incident that led to the END of the war between the Klingons and the Federation, due to the heroic sacrifice made by the crew of the Enterprise-C.

I agree in principle, but I think it is the principles of the Federation that got them into such trouble with the Klingons to start with.

Still you make a good point, so I concede. And I agree the Cardies would be with-holding their top ships, until an ambitious Gul named Dukat convinced them that keeping the Federation strong would be better than having the Klingons knocking on their doors.

Or a Federation that can be taken advantage of after the war due to its weakness.

On the other issues I've seen flying around:

The Federation-Klingon war, the one that ran through TOS and the movie era ended with the signing of the Khitomer Treaty (STVI)...this began a period of declining tensions between old enemies.

Narenda III was the turning point for Fed/Klingon relations, in that the heroics of the Enterprise-C showed the Klingons that the Federation could be honourable and noble which led to the alliance between the two powers.

The failure by the Enterprise-C in the Yesterday's Enterprise to reach Narenda III probably showed the Klingons that the Federation were cowards who couldn't be trusted which slowly degenerated into war.
